How much do you love... Vanilla?

The reason why I sometimes play vanilla over TOME, nethack, or ADOM is because it seems to me to be the only *band/roguelike that gets the Mage right. The Mage in Angband can do all sorts of things, and they're not limited to just 5 spell per spellbook, and only 4 spellbooks like what is done in a lot of other variants. And it doesn't have a skill system associated to it. On the one hand the skill system that's been implemented in a lot of variants does force you to strategize, but you end up with a character who can't do anything other than what they've specialized in.
The only thing that I don't like about it is that it starts to get a little monotonous near end-game. It would be nice if there were some options of what to do near end-game. TOME has done this somewhat, you kill Morgoth, then you get to banish him forever should you desire. But, what if it was possible to do other kinds of things, like you could kill Morgoth if you want, or you could go into the outer planes, (like to Hell, or some equivalent) or to the realms of other Deities (Ptah, Zeus, Gorgrimera... etc.). -
