Because fire and cold don't influence your armour ^.^
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

My idea about cases and bags was tongue in cheek. Keeping important stuff safe is a vital part of inventory management that shouldn't be removed by having cases and bags (unless they are very expensive and have some fail rate).

So, if you're down to your last ?recall at 4900', but *must* run half away across the level for some battle or pickup, why not dig an ASC, drop ?recall at the end of it and protect it with a rune!

        To be realistic:

If you get hit in the front with fire, nothing will burn up. If you get hit in the back (where your backpack is, I assume) then there is a chance it could get singed.

May not apply to potions etc. that you keep on your belt or whatever. I'm just in a brainstorming mood....

          Brainstorming...

Perhaps elven shields could have a single inventory slot in the back that could be used to keep ONE item safe from anything.

          or..

Don't Dreads pick up items? I know they pass through walls. If not there's allways Black Reavers to make a path for something else that picks up items. I suppose you want people to run half way across the level so they can make the ASC in a corner where nothing can accidentally come past and disturb it.

FWIW, Hellband has 5 non-stackable slots in the equipment side of your inventory for scrolls and potions, which I believe are protected from the elements (at least, they were never molested in any of my games... but the slots weren't explained in the documentation). I think you had to take them out to use them. I didn't feel it unbalanced things excessively.

I don't think the state of affairs in V is bad enough to any changes to equipment or hounds, however. NPP on the other hand... :P

Talisman of Shatter Protection, Talisman of Shock Protection, Talisman of Corrosion Protection, Talisman of Burn Protection... ?

1 inventory slot, protects your stuff from the corresponding bad effects? (And make it clear in the object description that they don't provide resistances, merely protect the inventory and equipment.)

I like this idea ... Even more inventory management options like do I let my stuff burn or do use this Talisman of Burn Protection to save my scroll/books/staves in my backpack and lose that inventory slot. Also this would apply only to inventory right? It would not protect armor/weapons etc?

Those talismans already exist. They are:

                      Narya (IM FIRE)
                      Nenya (IM COLD)
                      Vilya (IM ELEC)
                      Thorin (IM ACID)

There are other less common ones, but you will see at least 1 of the above just about every time you get deep.

Until you get there, focus on avoiding the guys that damage your inventory. That's not nearly the worst thing that can happen. After all, when you die you lose everything.

And rather than explore the whole dungeon, play Rogue or carry Rods (or scrolls) of Detect Treasure. Detection is a lot easier than sniffing around the whole dungeon.
