My first (and only) winner happened on SVN HEAD (before the 3.1 release, with all the existing bugs and stat potion scarcity).
I was able to max my stats, although I ended up finding stat potions at MUCH deeper levels than I had to in earlier versions. I think if people wait for maxed stats before proceeding past 1500' they will find 3.1 intolerable, but my experience was fine.
