Purpose of social status in Vanilla 3.1

I noticed something about the "Social" category in the Character Display, via "C". It says your character is an Outcast, Pariah, Well-liked, etc. Does anyone know the effect of this in Vanilla 3.1? I know that it rises as you level up from a baseline. Before version 3.1, there was a social "status" with a number from 1-100 that would determine the starting gold.
