What does this do, I've always asked myself if it was important. Does it just protect you when you fall in a pit or is good against something Gravity hounds.

I've been playing almost every day for more than 10 years and I've never really knew what it does.

It protects you against damage taken from falling through trap doors. Additional you are protected from any damage or side effects of pit traps.
