So by the book, you're supposed to have hold life before going more than 2500' deep. But only amulets that appear at 3000' and deeper give you hold life! What nasties should I watch out for before I get hold life?

Lots of them. Hold life is one of those luxury resistances that aren't really all that necessary. Carry a stack of !restoreLifeLevels and you'll be alright. Generally, V's, W's, G's... lots of other things. Basically if your exp gets drained, just move out of melee range... drain life is more of an irritation than a life threatening thing, so long as you have escapes.Bands, / Those funny little plans / That never work quite right.
