    The RNG hates me. :)

Coming back after a bit of time off, and playing the latest beta because the 4.2.4 release seemed like it was behaving a little oddly to me. Nothing I can pin down firmly enough to make a bug report, but it seemed like it would occasionally miss my action input and give the monster another move... but not completely sure.

But, the RNG is teasing me this time. Mage, CL34 at DL43, but I have not found a single anything that is +speed yet, and I'm starting to get beaten up a bit as a result. I've also only found one dungeon book, but that might be normal, I can't remember what their depths are anymore.

On the plus side, this is the first game where I've gotten to this point and so far managed to avoid killing either of Farmer Maggot's dogs. (I mean, it's not the dogs' fault they wandered into an unfortunate cave...) :-)

Are you sure it's not because mobs have randomized speed that can go up to +2 in rare cases? That's a feature not a bug.

Your speed woes seem normal. My characters often have a speed crisis at ~dlvl 50, having found no speed items. I'd consider myself pretty lucky to have significant speed at dlvl 42

Having said that, I recently played a randart game with a mage, where I had permanent +23 speed at your depth. Unprecedented in my playing, but randarts can be quite friendly with +speed.

I'm also quite familiar with having speed issues at middle levels like that in older versions (just coming back after last playing v4.0.something). Even !Speed become precariously few.

Starting out combat with -SlowMonster becomes a necessary workaround. Inferior, but necessary. When it works...

I carry wands of slow monsters and use them all the time, even when my character is higher level. I find that they are very useful and work most of the time, though I generally play mages and rangers with better magic device skill.
