Played, and won, my first game with a "new" paladin (i.e. new spellbooks, etc.). It was a bit hard to judge the paladin in the early to mid game, because I had a ton of luck getting early speed, great bow, good artifact weapon, multiple immunities, etc. So I breezed through the early and mid game. Things evened out for the late game.
My main complaint with the original paladin, to the extent I had one, is just that it was kind of boring, so I rarely played it. The "new" paladin is certainly more interesting and, I suspect, rather more powerful. I did not care for the blackguard, nor (with only limited play) the druid, nor did I like the new ranger (esp. his spells). However, the spells for the new paladin seem to suit the class and they certainly seem to be better than ranger spells, that's for sure. The ability to get *healing* early on is super powerful. The slay evil and slay demons were also powerful. I only tried the single combat twice, once against Maeglin and once against Morgoth. I thought it would be stronger against Morgoth than it turned out to be, largely because I hadn't really reckoned what it meant to go truly toe to toe with Morgoth, versus my usual dance with him. It was nice not to have to worry about getting rid of summoned creatures, but no way to bounce away to heal, etc.
Overall, my impressions of the new paladin were positive and I think it likely I will play this character class more often in the future than I would have played the old one.
