How long until this one dies?

I just killed Golfimbul and he dropped a +5 ring of speed...

So how long until he dies? I know the extra speed is going to make me careless, and he still doesn't have basic resists covered. Ugh.

Do you want him to die?
If not, just remind yourself that you're not invincible or, if you need to, try to forget that you have those speed boots and stop expecting death. True, you'll probably still die, but he'll have a better chance because that pessimism/fatalism is bad for your character's health.

BTW, I think the mage is the only class that can find those Boots of Wormtongue useful because that -8 -8 has no effect on spells.

      Not dead, yet.

Those boots of wormtongue. Do you wear them? I'm still not sure how useful they'll be.

since you aren't using archery, probably pretty good. But a 49SP Mage can't afford not to use archery... If you do use it you would want to swap weapons for anything that gives you a nonmelee bonus, even *slay animal* for the INT.

          Well, he's not dead, yet.

And now he has the 4 basic resists. Do those boots require a *remove curse* or just a normal remove curse?

I don't understand that death-you were using melée wearing NoWormtongue, and had full SP available. You could have teleported, phased & ccw, etc. Usually a Mage ends
up in melée because he runs out of ammo and mana, but that does not appear to be the case here. You might want to try a half-caster or a warrior next...

Why wear a ring of protection? Surely you must have found something better.

                    Never found a better ring.

I thought it was a baby green dragon, not a young one.

I got into the habit of just meleeing down the babys. I died with my finger on the attach key before I noticed it wasn't a baby.

Keep a monster list term window. It helps.
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

It's a useful lesson to use melee as a last resort for full casters - just stay out of melee range when possible and use Lightning Bolt and the like to bring them down. If you get into the swing of doing that with early monsters (with Magic Missille, initially) then it becomes a habit to use spells until most/all of your SP is used up...

Excellent suggestion. Live (or die) and learn.

I'm used to playing Paladins / Rangers. Still getting used to playing a mage.

At that level definitely don't melee unless you're sure it's harmless. At higher levels you will find that melee'ing can do some massive damage and you may want to throw them in selectively to conserve mana, but only against monsters without certain horrible melee abilities or against monsters that are not immune to whatever your weapon may be branded with.

The amount you melee should be directly proportional to how many ways of escaping you have.
