nope, I usually do, at low levels for sure (that is, when I can).
Later, I'll detect monsters first. I'll generally banish water and fire hounds without question because their XP vs. potential damage to my stuff is just too low. Once I can reasonably handle the high-experience Z's like plasma, nether, etc with appropriate resistances, I'll hunt them down and kill them for experience. Hound hunting almost requires a form of telepathy to make it moderately safe/effective.
I think High level Rangers are pretty well suited for hound hunting. Not based on real data, but my experience is that the range of breath of a Z is only like 1/2 to 3/4 of a longbow, so can kill them off outside their breath range if you are fast enough and have enough shots/round. You definitely need to use map geometry to help; corners are the best, then corridors. If you get surrounded, you can easily die. Nether hounds pass thru rock too.
Time hounds are worth big bucks too and their breath attacks are mostly unresistable, even if you have the appropriate resistance so I don't generally tangle with them unless I have a means to easily kill them AND restore experience AND restore all stats.
I cast Banishment Z when in get on a new level, but only in my head since I'm playing a FA mage that doesn't have the spell.
But I'm casting it in spirit. Burning, seething spirit.

I play rangers and rogues so that spell isnt at my disposal. And I seem to have terrible luck with it...I find that banishment scroll, cast it on Z and "die from the strain of casting banishment"
You loose some HP per removed monster.
Banish T when fighting Bill and one of the other two Stone Trolls almost killed me (both of them summoned, I teleported, recovered, banished... survived it with 0! HP).
I was playing NPP then.
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.
