How not to waste my Blood of Life

I retrieved the Blood of Life artifact on dungeon level one and am asking for suggestions on how not to waste it from some of the more experienced players among you ToME addicts. I am playing ToME4. This is my fifth time playing. I am playing an archer. Yes, I have checked the spoilers.

Don't die.

BoL lets you ressurect one time. It lasts until that happens. If you suffer a stupid avoidable death that's a waste of it, but still better than wasting the whole character.
