    Demonologist is a bit meh...

I am currently a level 39 zombie High-Elf Demonologist, and it plays like a Swordmaster.

I constantly have better swords, better helms and the shield doesn't have good spells.

To me, the good spells for Demonologist are:
Demon blade (+50 damage/shot with splash)
    Summon demon
    Control demon

I have found Ringil and the Demon Blade of Gothmog.

And Ringil is just better IMO. The demon blade does a lot of damage, but +10 speed.

The minotaur helm is better than the demon horn of gothmog

As far as summoning goes, symbiosis/summoning gives better options. Obviously you need to get it from fumble finger quests.

If I could make a change that would tip its power level would be to add another spell that gives the blade lifesteal.

Or maybe a demon form transformation that could give you an extra arm.

Does having all Gothmogs artifacts give you any additional power over just the individual pieces?

The complete Gothmog demonologist set (doesn't include his whip) does gain additional flags. Some of them are very, very bad.

Take a look at demonologist winners on the ladder. Most of them are not wielding any demonologist books at all.

Mine says - 20 speed, str and con, but it seems like that hasn't actually happened.

Gothmog's Armoury items don't gain bad flags AFAICT.

        Code:
        # Gothmog's Armoury -- Demonologists set

        N:3:Gothmog's Armoury
D:It is from a group of items that once belonged to Gothmog,
D:the High Captain of the Balrogs
        # The demonblade of Gothmog
        P:181:3:7
        F:CON
        F:SPEED
        F:STR
        F:VAMPIRIC
        # The demonshield of Gothmog
        P:182:3:0
        F:IM_COLD
        F:IM_FIRE
        F:SH_ELEC
        # The demonhorn of Gothmog
        P:183:3:0
        F:ESP_EVIL
        F:ESP_GOOD
In fact they get pretty powerful. Blade gets +7 STR, CON, speed, and vampirism. Shield gets both fire and cold immunity. Horn gets both good and evil ESP.

Definitely easier to find good artifacts outside the set though. And yeah, most Demonology powers IMO don't justify the equipment limitation.

The set is easy to farm in the sandworm lair, if anyone wants to bother.

My version 2.3.5 also gives the helm autoID. Which is a pretty big deal.

The spells I use are demon blade (+40 damage/hit with radius 1 splash) and summon demon.

In retrospect I would reduce my skill points so that it doesn't splash. It upsets my summons

Oh right, I'm using 2.4.0 - the C++ port auto-IDs everything by default Definitely some big gameplay changes, but I appreciate the streamlining.
