    Sil-Q nearly official release

There's a new Sil-Q release. I intended to make this the official release but at the last ditch I found myself unconvinced Song of Valour was going to ever find love and I replaced it, so more testing is in order.

Various cleaning and tidying changes as release nears. Some new toys as well, though... Bugfixes: Silly bug with [ and ] mishandling line of sight items fixed. Corner case with Rapid Attack, Impal...

Sil-Q does however now have a manual. The detailed list of changes can be found at the link above. Mostly it's tweaks to jewellers and underused or underpowered skills; there are also a few bugfixes and a couple of new items.

sil-q-release-8.zip is the Windows release and contains the new manual.

Enjoy! And please report all bugs and failings you encounter. (Also, I would like to note that I currently don't love the song name "of Fierce Blows" and am open to better names).

Awesome! Looking forward to it. Burned out on sil a while ago so I'm holding off until your full release, but I'll make sure to complain/give feedback afterwards.

Hey there, first time posting on this forum.

I'm still relatively new to Sil (farthest I've gotten is 700ft), but I think I've generally got a handle on it, and I wanted to ask if you guys think there's any reason I should stick to the base game rather than switching to a fork?

I just quite like the changes you're making (I'm a fan of polearms, for one), but if the advice of experienced players would be to get a win on the base game first, I'd want to consider that.

Either way I'm gonna keep up with this fork's development, and having said that, how is the official release schedule looking, Mr. Quirk?

P.S. It's anecdotal, and probably partly coincidence, but I actually just set that 700ft personal record on my first real run of Sil-Q last night (still going, too), so there's a bit of user feedback.

Edit: Minor update - I somehow got trapped in a room by a "Grotesque" on 700ft, almost gave up hope, but was saved by a "Kemenrauko" tunneling into the room, which then proceeded to earthquake the room apart and kill me lol. Lessons have been learned.

So, the difficulty so far has been getting user testing on less used bits e.g. fighting songs, but I'm more or less at the point of being as happy with the Song tree as I'll get without a major rethink of costings. Beyond that though I've already written up the 1.3 to 1.4 changelog and am planning to roll out the Windows build and official release next week.

With regard to playing original Sil vs the fork, I do think it's worth experiencing an original Sil Song of Slaying throne room battle at least once, so even if you settle into mostly playing Sil-Q I hope you go back to Sil 1.3 and complete it too.

I really wish I could personally give you some feedback on the Song tree, but I'm still figuring out the more fundamental aspects of a good melee/evasion build, and as a personal preference I tend to avoid lots of spoilers/guides for these games. Just learned somewhere on a Sil-Q thread yesterday that I shouldn't be using Subtlety if I'm not a stabber, for example. I do like the sound of "Song of Thresholds", though, and "Song of Challenge" for annoying archers.

I think I'll take your advice and generally put my time into vanilla until I can win, but I am gonna check out the full release of Sil-Q.

One thing that was sticking in my mind about playing vanilla over Sil-Q was what I've read about Momentum sort of unbalancing the game towards light weapons, and I guess just generally the kind of weapon and ability balancing issues which you're trying to fix with Sil-Q. But if nothing else, I can probably find more advice and guidance for the base game in getting my first win.

P.S. Sorry I talk so much :P Also thanks for replying!

V.U.E. that's pretty much a common build give or take a few abilities by personal preference. Whether you can afford the ?s is a bit wait & see if you've got the xp.

Thanks very much for the feedback; I'm embarrassed to say I'd never used Song of Slaying (or much Song in general) before my last run, and have I ever been missing out!

One last question I've got is how exactly Momentum works. It doesn't seem to add damage sides innately, at least with 2 strength wielding a 2-3lb longsword. Am I misunderstanding how it works?

P.S. to Quirky: Feel free to delete these posts at your discretion - I don't wanna clutter your Sil-Q thread.

Momentum lets you use strength that would otherwise be lost on a light weapon. When using a 2 lb weapon with 2 strength, you are using your strength with maximum efficiency. If however you have 4 strength, your weapon will still only gain you 2 damage sides - unless you take Momentum, and then you will get to use all 4.

And yes, this build is a very common build.

Sil-Q isn't really an "advanced" Sil and you don't need to have beaten Sil to play it; I would particularly recommend it if you are trying to make a non-sword build work, because it is rebalanced toward giving all weapons a fairer shot at being good, or if you want to play a smith. I just don't have the hubris to claim my fork displaces all reason for playing the original.

Thank you SO much for explaining Momentum in a way I understand. And yeah, I probably absorbed more of that build from bits I've read than I realized. I'll get more creative after my first win!

I do understand what you're getting at about experiencing the base game, and I think I'll try to reach the throne room at least once before branching out, but I'm also a fan of your vision for Sil-Q - more balance in variety is only a good thing (and FA elves with spears is so right).

Kemen AI needs looking at if it hasn't already changed in the latest. Trying to run away slowly through a wall isn't a great escape plan. They could possibly be fearless like the troll. e.g. only Elbereth.
