    New Player?

I am a new player. I am currently playing a melee/evasion Noldor Fingolfin with 3/3/5/3 skills on 300 ft. I have found stacks of daggers and spears, and use them for throwing. Can you only throw things in the 8 directions around you? Archers seem to be able to hit you anywhere in their los. What should I do? Should I dive as fast as possible? What should I skill?

You can target any monster or square with 't'. You should focus on melee basics before skills-to hit and evasion. Otherwise there are a whole lot of Sil tutorial videos out there.
And you should dive relatively fast, so you don't run out of turns before being able to pick up loot deep. But don't get carried away.

Which are better, greaves which give -1 evasion but +1d3 protection, or greaves that have no evasion penalty but only 1d2 protection?

And I did not notice that a troll got behind me, so, I hit it instead of running. This run is over.

[+0, 1d2] is usually better then [-1, 1d3], it can depend on your setup though.

't' or 'f' targets last target or closest. Use * to hit a different target.

Dive speed is a matter of taste, 1 option is to dive as fast as you can, note what kills you & then make sure you have a solution for that enemy when you enter that depth.

melee/evasion characters want more melee/evasion pretty much. Probably keen senses around the depth invisible things start hitting you.

Another run over. Chased a giant into a hall, when I stumbled into a web. A sword spider appeared behind me and the giant started beating on me. I managed to kill the spider just before the giant took off my last few points of health.

Webs are nasty! At a certain point you have to take some Perception and Will to handle the traps and various status effects that start showing up.

This is one benefit to high-strength characters They have a greater chance to escape from webs. Free action also gives you a bonus to escaping, if you have that.

I would choose the 1d3 for -1 evasion, but I played protection based warriors. Like Wobbly said, depends on your setup. I stack armor so I'm strong against many things, and weak against poison attack monsters and shadows. Most players seem to prefer high evasion, but you can approach this game from many angles. Work with what seems sensible to you! The first winner sang to victory, fwiw.

Shadows do dark damage, armour wont help, only evasion or light (or hardiness, =protection etc.) help. Spiders, balrogs are mixed damage there's a critical that is element or poison damage. Pretty sure the spider is a high critical critter too like the cat (high accuracy, few damage dice) and will do large amounts of damage unless your evasion is good.

How can I upload a character dump? When I press ), all I get is a html screenshot. The angband ladder does not accept it. (note: I do not play angband).

                        thanks wobbly!

@arandomperson12 at the bottom of the character screen (press @ to get there) there are several commands listed. one of them is "s" for save character. this file will be saved in the user file within the lib file. when you click on "ladder" there is an option at the bottom to submit a dump.

Thanks seraph. Here is my character. What should I skill? Should I buy any abilities? How should I identify my stuff?

god dammit it ate my post.

just go here for id help. the only thing that i'll add on that subject is i often drink potions of confusion while confused. thus it won't id. also some of the monsters mentioned no longer exist.

i wouldn't take any abilities yet; except maybe disguise. it's a small investment in the long run but it keeps you from getting into fights with absolutely everything. other than that pump skills for now, primarily melee and evasion, secondarily perception and will. if you find an awesome piece of equipment go from there.

Wobbly got it, thanks! I had forgotten criticals as a problem, since you tend to lose evasion combat rolls by a large amount with say, 9-13 evasion, which is often what I would finish with. I would usually have 10-30 protection for most of the game, with varying amounts slightly higher or lower depending on combat ability. So, instead of not getting hit, I would just get hit all the time and not care.
