    Smithing Catalog

    Hello!

I've been playing Sil for a week or so now, and I'd like to try a smithing character. I've read several posts here on the forum that mention numerous items, and I've browsed through the ladder to look at winners also.

However, I would find it super useful if some folks could post their favorite recipes here in this thread so we could have them in a single place. If enough items are posted, I will put them into a standard format and list them here in this top post.

To get us started, here are some of the good recipes I've seen so far.

Not enough lights for my liking, so I'll add:

Helm of brilliance [-1,1d2] - 9 pts , armoursmith, enchantment
Lesser Jewel of Brilliance - 10 pts, jeweler, enchantment
Lesser Jewel of Grace - 15 pts, jeweler, enchantment
Feanorian Lamp of Brillance - 16 pts, jeweler, enchantment
Feanorian Lamp of Grace - 21 pts, jeweler, artifice

The Taoist in me can't resist:
Shadow Cloak of Light - 27 pts, armoursmith, artifice

& I hate shadows enough for:
2 pd Mithril Longsword "Noon" - light, slay undead - 16 pts, weaponsmith, artifice
Doubles as a good anti-shadow spider weapon

    Almost forgot:
Longbow of Radiance - 9pts, weaponsmith, enchantment
So very, very useful for early game survivability

      Thanks wobbly!

Can you explain to me the lights with +grace? They don't strike me as immediately useful.

Also, is the Longbow of Radiance good because it lets you see things far away in the dark?

The lights with grace are from playing a lot of singer/smiths. +1 grace = +1 smithing & another +1 on song of aule. I tend to pick up a cloak of grace (15pts) too. High enough grace raises your voice to the pt where you can pretty much sing non-stop & if you have song of elbereth you can start chasing every thing off the level. Making the balrog of terror run appeals to my sense of humour.

The long bow of radiance beside just being solid without needing the archery investment a short bow needs, I just use to light up the whole level. No walking in to violet molds, improved accuracy vs orcs trying to hide in the dark, pinpoints hidden archers, harder for orcs to sneak up & corner you when you can see down all the corridors etc.

Round Shield [+1,1d4] D:10 (at the first forge with artistry)
Leather Armour [0,1d5] D:10 (another first forge pick)
Helm [0,1d3] D:10 (to complete my artistry kit at the first forge)

Another nice starter set with lower skill is a +1 accuracy, a +1 evasion and a Horn of Terror.

Fancy, yet not too difficult, artefacts are a philosopher's helm (w/ concentration), amulet/robes/crowns with dual skill bonus, everything with real speed (not only sprinting), sharp shortswords. The coolest (not strongest) artefact I made were fire resisting, free action boots w/ wrath - I even looked up a Sindarin name for "walking on fire"

Added the items you mentioned, except what I quoted above, because it was unclear.

Well, it is rings of ... - they are really nothing special, but early 200 xp for the identification, they almost equal a free dexterity point (for a dwarf without archery and stealth) and the additional forge uses want to be used anyway.

Ok got it. I had +2 rings on there for D:13, so I added notes for these lesser rings.

What level of smithing is common to have at the first and second forges?

Ring of Accuracy (+3), D:21, Jwl
Ring of Accuracy (+4), D:31, Jwl
Ring of Evasion (+3), D:21, Jwl
Ring of Evasion (+4), D:31, Jwl

If you're doing hardcore smithing, +4 to a combat stat is often better than whatever artifact you could put in that slot (esp. since ring artifacts can't get combat bonuses)

                  Amulet of Grace <+1>, D:15, Jwl, 2gra
                  Crown of Grace <+1>, D:12, Jwl, 1gra
Gloves of the Forge <+3>, D:18, ArmEnc, 300xp
Cloak of the Diva [+1] (+1 grace and song), D:20, ArmAtf, 100xp, 1gra

Some higher-end smithing gear that was missing.

A couple more reasonably priced protective items:

Studded Leather of Resilience [-2,1d6], D:13, ArmEnc, 1con
Cloak of Protection [+1,1d1], D:12, ArmEnc

When it comes to the higher-end stuff it's hard to have real recipes because it's largely about covering whatever weaknesses there are in the gear that's dropped for you so far.

Artistry start stuff for the second forge!

                      Gauntlets [+0, 1d1], D:7, ArmArt
                      Cloak [+2], D:7, ArmArt

You might as well put something nice in those two slots, even if you can't make anything as nice as goes in the other four.

A trick for affording the whole damn smithing tree(except artistry) on a Feanor smith:

                        Hammer with +1 smithing & armoursmith (12pts, 600xp)
                        Gloves with Jeweler & Masterpiece (17pts, 1000xp)

or coming at it from the armoursmith order:

                        Gloves with Weaponsmith & Jeweler (15pts, 1000xp)
                        Hammer with +2 smithing & masterpiece(20pts, 700xp)

It's a decent option if your trying for boots of perma-haste (36pts) which virtually requires masterpiece.

flattering to see several of my favorites there.

To the gauntlets, I'd add [+0. 1d2], which is an option over (-1) [+1, 1d2]. Many if not most heavy armor wearers will not trade a point of melee for a point of evasion.

Awesome, I've updated the first post with the recent additions.

I've created a "smithing gear" section and put in the two sets that wobbly mentioned. I think it would be great to develop this area further and create some smithing progressions divided up as:

                            - starting skills
                            - first forge builds
                            - second forge builds
                            - late-game goal/options

For high-evasion fighters, a robe of haste is a cheaper alternative at around 25 smithing (21 with danger I think).
