    New Naugrim House!

Who can understand the intricacies of Dwarven intrigue and politics? It turns out that House Belegost has been overthrown by House Khazad-Dum! They have the same great strength and low motor skills as the Belegost did, yet they've mastered Smithing as well as their Nogrod brethren! Sadly the great Will of the Belegost has now been lost forever.

Well that's how it happened in my game at least. Your own Naugrim societies may have evolved differently.

(I just wanted to play a 4 strength master smith, and 4 strength isn't feasible with Nogrod. So I mixed and matched Nogrod and Belegost.)

This house has made 1.2 much more fun for me. I think a 4 strength master smith dwarf who starts with weaponsmith, armorsmith, and artistry is pretty thematic, but it's not real viable for the standard Belegost house. With this mixture of Belegost and Nogrod, I've been doing pretty well and winning is within reach. It's a fun build IMO.

Good to see that you're enjoying your preferred play style. Do make some nice, heavy artifact weapons.

Did a new version of Sil come out? Or this mpa-Sil exclusive?

I just changed my edit file for Belegost. Renamed them, removed will affinity, added smithing affinity.

Finally won last night with one of these guys, 4/0/5/3. Neat thing about the game is that it wasn't based on any lucky finds. In fact the my endgame equipment was all home made other than the Axe of Hurin. Just because I never found better artifacts than what I made.

By far the highest Con I've ever had. 178 unbuffed HPs gives even me a sufficient throne room buffer. But I still couldn't kill V. Maybe fully buffed and with rapid attack, (maybe,) but the prereqs put rapid attack out of reach for me.

I did customize the game once in the middle of it. I'd never realized before that Enchantment was necessary to get Masterpiece. I tend to put enchantment on a hammer though, and I'd taken all the other Smithing abilities. So I just added Artifice as a prereq. I used masterpiece to make a +2 con amulet.

I spent about 15k turns at 950 just seeing what sorts of monsters would come through the stairs. I only ever saw two types - highrauko and purple v's. I thought that was strange. Maybe it had to do with all the danger equipment I was carrying around.

              Code:

Regarding idling on 950' indefinitely when min depth is 1000, it seems that the deepest monsters capable of using stairs and also dropping items are two 850' monsters - cat assassins and troll guards. I'm not sure how likely 850' monsters are to appear through stairs to 950, but it's not apparently possible if you have enough danger stuff on.

Also speaking of prereqs on the smithing ability tree, I'm not sure I see the point.

I think the smithing tree is different from other trees in that a character who plans on dumping a bunch of exp into smithing, will also generally think that every ability on the tree is reasonably useful. And that gets very expensive, which presents the interesting and fun choice of using one of the abilities, artifice, in combination with one of two others, weaponsmith or armoursmith, to create items that give other abilities on the tree - enchant, artistry, jeweler, or masterpiece. Those are all interesting and certainly not overpowered choices, but if you plan on putting enchant on an item, you block yourself from getting Masterpiece without also putting it on an item, or wasting tons of experience. I think it's a shame that the game removes that as a reasonable choice.

Easy enough to change in the edit files, but just a thought.
