I guess it'd be hard not to go with something like a double-fine Mithril Corslet of Resilience, but in terms of realistically attainable stuff, I think a mattock of Belegost is maybe the best to me. They synergize with Revelations and Treasures very well especially, but also, as an escape or battleground-shaper they are game-changers, and very fun.

For medium-to-high-strength dudes, it's really super fun to find a perfect-weight fine war hammer in the early game. Something like (-1,4d2) 3.0lb that you can bash heads in withGlaurung, Father of the Dragons says, 'You cannot avoid the ballyhack.'Comment

My vote goes to the Bastard Sword of Hador's House or the Amulet of CON <+1>.My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

Actually finding an Amulet of the Blessed realm can be nice. Apart from that, some nice weapons can be handy, and so can a double-fine mithril mail of resilience. For the right character, a good shield can be good, too. A double-fine kite shield of deflection +2 can be a life-saver in the right hands.Comment

Generally makes a mattock and nice longbow at the second forge, which makes the investment in Weaponsmith quite worth it IMO.Comment
