We did actually talk about this issue at some point. Including trying to consult your computer's time zone and language settings to work out if you're in a country where that tradition is usual. Ultimately it's hard to get right, and it seems there is enough of a preponderance of people who open presents on Christmas day that it's best to keep the current simple rule.
I was carrying around my present to open at midnight today, but it was stolen by an orc thief. I like to think he opened it, it was an axe of gondolin, and it cursed him forever.
I've opened three presents so far just to see what they're like, and one of them was Ringil. Not sure how unlikely that was, but it's the first time I've ever seen Ringil.
