I sometimes use the sil tutorial to check the item costs for smithing when planing my build. However the tutorial character does not have enough experience to pick up weapon-smithing (or jeweller etc.). It'd be great if the tut. character started with all smithing abilities or even better if forges allowed you to scan through items you can't build.

Not sure if you know this already, but if you hit '0', you can actually 'explore' the forging menu without being at a forge. However, it still locks you out of things depending on your actual forging abilities.
For now, the alternative you can use is create a throwaway character, type 'ctrl-a' to enter wizard mode, type 'Gondolin' as the password, and then use Ctrl-x or ctrl-e (i can't remember which one) to give your character a bazillion experience. You can then go into smithing exploration mode to see what your options are.Glaurung, Father of the Dragons says, 'You cannot avoid the ballyhack.' -
Noticed something odd whilst loading & saving this character. When you save it adds a turn to the game count, though nothing moves & no resources are used up. So if you hit start new character & then save & load 10 times you have a turn count of 10.Comment
