    Sil for Windows Bugs?

    Hi all,

We went to a lot of work making a really simple control scheme for Sil.

Keypad => move in direction / pass
Shift Keypad => run in direction / rest until healed
Alt Keypad => fire arrow in direction / fire at target or at closest monster
Control Keypad => interact with terrain / interact with own square

This all works perfectly on Macs and combined with the unified use command, makes for a very streamlined and logical command set. However, I'm not sure if it works on Windows as my playtesters almost all play on laptops so they can only try Shift/Alt/Control with the arrow keys (which works).

So this is a call to Desktop Windows users: Do Shift/Alt/Control work with the keypad for you? If not, do they work with Vanilla Angband or other variants?

Desktop windows player here... yeah, the ctrl and shift keys work for me in Sil and Angband. I've never tried alt+arrows before though. That's likely because it seems to be tied to ranged attacks. I pretty much never do that.

Edit: Alt+direction works too. Just checked it out.

Arrow keys work fine and numpad keys without modifiers work fine but it seems numpad keys with modifiers don't work. I think this is the same in vanilla though.

One wierd thing, pressing alt and then all the numbers (to test) has gotten me at least three different responses, even when pressing them in the same order. Once it asked me if I was sure I wanted to destroy my character, once it turned on stealth mode and once it said type '?' for help. The one time I pressed them in a different order it asked me what to wield.

Alt + numpad keys generate a character with given number in Windows.

I'm very glad it works for at least someone! Which version of Windows is this?

If you could check that, it would be good to know. I'm prepared to try to copy V if it has solved this, but I doubt I'd be able to improve upon it's key-handling for a system I don't have...

Ouch! That could be a nasty problem! It is good that there are safeguards on that...

I flip flop between XP and Windows 7 whether I'm at work or home and I'm assuming they both function the same since I haven't noticed any difference between them.

Edit: Perhaps I should amend. I've never bothered using ctrl+direction in Angband, only shift+direction. I only just started using the ctrl+direction in Sil because it was either in your tutorial or perhaps the manual. And, I haven't played any version of V since maybe 3.0.9... too busy playing variants!

                Hi HallucinationMushroom,

You refer to "direction", and at one point earlier to "arrow". Can I just check: is this the numpad 8(9)-way directions, or the 4-way arrow direction keys? We're particularly interested in having an 8-way method that works, as otherwise it's clunkier when you need to use one of these alternate actions in a diagonal direction.

Yes, it seems that Shift, Control, and Alt work with the arrow keys for everyone, it is just the numberpad which seems to be causing trouble.

I always use the numberpad, never the directional keys. The numberpad works if numlock is on or off, but I can't shift+run if numlock is on. This has been the case with just about all angband games that I play.

Edit: It's also the case that I can't use ctrl+direction if numlock is on as well. If I had a bow and arrow handy I could try alternate key but I imagine it's the same case with numlock.

Ok I just did some quick testing. From what I can tell Sil behaves exactly like vanilla. Below are the results.

Numpad no modifier - works fine
Numpad with ctrl - does nothing unless numlock is off, works fine numlock off
Numpad with shift - moves one space with numlock on, runs with numlock off
Numpad with alt - does nothing unless numlock is off, with numlock off it works as expected until you release the alt key at which point it tries to enter the alt-code for the character you just typed in.

Edit - forgot to mention, this is on windows 7 64-bit
