Two options for map: map and overhead view. IIRC names feel reversed to what they actually do. "overhead view" shows "compressed" map, "map" shows everything, but only what fits into screen trying to keep you at the center of the screen (and there is a bug that causes part of the screen not to refresh properly, so it might be rather confusing). IMO "overhead view" is better especially if you use small enough font that it doesn't need to compress things to fit everything in the screen.
I tried this at some point but didn't get it to work the way I wanted to, I think it compressed things when I thought that it shouldn't, I guess I gave up to quick then.

Or you can always just use very large main screen if you have large enough monitor.
Unfortunately the whole issue was based on that I couldn't (and many other also can't) solve it by having a bigger main screen. If that was the solution, there wouldn't be a problem...

We constantly have people pointing out that big tiles and small screens can cause instadeath from off-screen breaths/spells. The TK-type mini map, accurate in that is shows everything that is there (all monsters/items etc displayed) but made so small that you don't see what monster/item it is, would be great. It worked really well for me when I (re-)started *banding with ZangbandTK a few years back.
FWIW, takkaria always wanted to implement some form of minimap (ticket #277). I don't know if Derakon intends for one to be added to Pyrel at some point, but I'd be in favour.

that's exactly it. Try setting up term windows on a laptop. The fonts are unreadable. (Yet another reason to implement system fonts' they're much cleaner at smaller pitch)

The TK map had a couple nice things: it was clean and clear in a small window, showed all objects monsters features etc, and it was mousable. (hover the mouse over the map and it showed you that area on the main screen, quick panning)

What about a custom font, a tiny font (maybe as small as 4x4) to be used exclusively for the mini-map.

Yes, this was my idea in the long run.
