    More food/drink variation in Angband?

Just taste these: dry beef jerky, a hard biscuit, wine that's probably never been below 10 degrees celcius... they do leave a dry and nasty taste in your mouth don't you think?

What if we could add some extra food/drink items to Angband? And maybe some of those could give the player some temporary positive/negative side-effects in addition to filling up the belly also?

    Suggested additional drinks:

    -Elf wine
    -Well aged Elf wine
    -Nectar
    -Dwarvish Ale
    -Strong Dwarvish liquor

    Suggested additional food items:

-A whole Elvish Waybread (contains several servings)
    -Blueberry pie
    -Sausage
    -Carrot
    -Apple
-Abandoned still sizzling pan with egg and bacon
    -Roasted meat
    -Roasted rat meat
-Meat that looks like chicken (but you're not sure)

These are just a bunch that I put down from many more possible additions, and I don't think you should have to prepare them in any way in order to gain additional bonuses/just eat them, although that would be a fun feature if you're playing as a hungry hobbit.

Speaking of alternate food sources... I kind of dig the whole corpse/cooking/eating thing that's implemented in ADOM (a non-Angband roguelike). (www.adom.de)

Monsters have a small chance of leaving a corpse, which you can eat (raw or otherwise; that game has a Cooking skill, or you can hit it with a fire bolt).

Some monsters have a temporary or even permanent effect when their corpse is eaten. Many of the effects are things that don't exist in Angband (like affecting alignment, offering control of teleport destination, etc). Some ideas that might work for Angband:

Hounds and dragons might give temporary resistance to the element they breathe
    Quylthugs might make you hallucinate
Undead might have a Salt Water effect along with XP drain (well, you can't eat everything)
Giants could give a temporary STR or CON boost (or just offer LOTS of extra satiation)
Dark elves could give temporary infravision

Effects like this would be especially fun with relatively rare monsters, especially if the corpse-drop percentage were tweaked. In ADOM, you really-really-really want a blink dog to drop a corpse, so you can eat it for permanent Teleport Control. You can also get permanent resistances, stat boosts, all sorts of fun stuff. Most of which is not necessary in Angband -- but temporary effects would be fun, I think.

I have enjoyed ADOM quite a bit, and, while I'm no Barry Kearns or Alex Pinachos, I have a handful of wins to my name. Not speaking for the devteam, but just for myself, I'd be against adding this corpse mechanic to V.

One of the obstacles is that, unlike ADOM, which draws more heavily from Hack, Angband, as a Rogue descendant, has much more constrained inventory. Lugging corpses of different kinds around for sustenance and temporary boosts is simply not feasible in the current Angband pack (and I like it that way!). I also suspect, though have not concluded, that semipermanent player intrinsic additions on the scope of ADOM's corpses would be too much player modding for good game balance. Finally, and I admit this argument is very much subjective, corpse eating feels antithetical to Angband flavor to me.

I never got anywhere with ADoM, but I have played quite a bit of Crawl (found runes, never the orb), which also has a corpse mechanic. I have to say I don't really like it. I can see it's a way to make the food subgame more interesting - and it does - but IMO at the expense of quite a lot of flavour. Eating corpses just doesn't really work for me.

That said, I'm not actually averse to character mods. I quite fancy potions of mutation ...

          I second that one.

Me neither, in case it wasn't clear. I just don't want them happening at the rate corpses would drop.

http://www.soldak.com/Dins-Curse/Demon-War.html I'd recommend folks sample this particular game, which isn't short of Roguelike machinations, for some examples of food/drink used to do things versus the corpse eating in ADOM. Dungeons of Dredmor tries to go a bit beyond the basics.

The corpse mechanic makes sense in Crawl, where there is no town, shops never restock, and no sustain self spells or items. (And also there are other things to do with corpses, like necromancy.)

But in Angband where there is unlimited food already, it's not necessary.

All respect to Mr.Tolkien, but I think he rolled around a few times in his grave when this idea was proposed. Can you imagine halflings, elves and dwarves carving up trollsteakes for the purpose of gaining their powers?

It might fit in another game and setting, but I do hope something like this never goes into Angband..

Frodo: "I'll have the trollsteak dinner".
Waiter: "Would you like soup or salad with that?"
Frodo: "What soup do you have?"
Waiter: "We have Orc's Blood with noodles and a very tasty Troll-Anus Stew."
Frodo: "Mmmm... Give me the Troll-Anus."
Waiter: "... and for you sir?"
Gandalf: "Just bring me the Saruman Sampler. Does that come with fries?"
