One more thing relating to creeping coins that may not be a bug but does seem wierd. This happened in the August 25th nightly and happened previously too. I see the following messages:
"The 38 gold pieces worth of silver was really a monster!"
    ...
"You have slain the creeping silver coins"
"You pick up 23 gold pieces worth of silver"
Where'd the other fifteen gold pieces go??

That *should* be fixed in the nightly -- it works for me, anyway. As a quick sanity check, go to monster_base.txt and make sure that line "F:MIMIC_INV" is present for creeping coins.

I could prevent mimics from being created on items, but I'm not sure how much it's worth the bother. The only time a monster is created on an item (I think) is in vaults and certain other special rooms. I'm okay with giving the observant player a slight edge over mimics.

Here is what's in monster_base.txt under the creeping coins entry.

        Code:
        N:creeping coins
        G:$
        M:1
        F:COLD_BLOOD | METAL | UNAWARE | EMPTY_MIND
        F:ONLY_GOLD
        F:BASH_DOOR
        F:IM_ELEC | IM_POIS | NO_CONF | NO_SLEEP
        D:Creeping Coins

Then you're not playing the nightly -- that was changed on August 14th.

            I downloaded the file at

http://rephial.org/nightlies that says revision b244b9a. Is that not the current nightly?

The top revision I see is 342c831, dated 25 Aug 2011. I don't even see the revision you mention listed.

Hmm. My computer must have an old page cached or something. I see the version you mention on my phone

For what it's worth, I wanted to mention another bit of strange mimic behavior. I recalled down to a room that contained an energy vortex and a potion mimic. The vortex breathed on me, and its breath attack exposed the mimic ("The potion mimic flinches"). So I knew what I was facing; but the mimic never "de-cloaked"; it assumed that I still wasn't aware of it, and it never attacked. Just for fun, I hung around two tiles away from it, sharing energy damage with it. After a while I got bored and wandered off. I assume this is not the desired behavior.

I suspect not - good catch. This could go either way: either the breath attack reveals the mimic and it starts attacking you, or neither (and we change it so that "the potion mimic flinches" doesn't happen).

I vote for the latter - that mimics ignore hostile spell effects until the player reveals them.

I vote for the former. I like the flavor of a mimic having its cover blown when it flinches after being hit with something. The other way a mimic could potentially be killed while just sitting there doing nothing.

A few other comments from 3.3.0:

                          - Mimic detection can also be made if the mimic is in a hallway and other awake monsters get stuck behind it.

                          - creeping coins (mithril, adamantite) tend to have significantly lower monetary values than stacks of actual AU. Adamantite CC may show up as ~300 AU range whereas a drop from a monster would net 1200+ AU. Yes, this means I didn't comment out creeping coins from the monster list, I now just squelch all AU except mithril and adamantite. I've only tried this in selling games.

+1. If it gets to ignore attacks, so do I.
