It seems like people are finding Ringil a lot more than they used to. It used to be a once-every-few-dozen-games find, not quite as rare as the One Ring but still very uncommon. Now it seems like it's more on the order of once-every-five-games or somewhere around there.Comment

I have never been able to find it through grinding the 90's... I've only found it a few times much shallower than that.Comment
-
you know...it's possible to determine how often you find Ringil relative to any other item/weapon of choice.Comment

Extreme luck continues. The very next level I get "good feeling" and see BlueDSM just before taking downstairs. BlueDSM of Speed (+9).
I need to write this in AAR.Comment

But my instinct is the same as yours (shocking, I know). I've seen four or five people post about finding The One in the past year or two, compared with perhaps one in the ten previous years. Somehow, some change to the drop system back in 3.1.x has subtly increased the chances of really great drops. I can't see how, as the fundamentals of the good/great/artifact system haven't changed in years apart from replacing rarity with alloc_prob (which makes no difference to the probability).
Perhaps there are just way more people playing and posting nowadays?"Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

Fundamental change that was introduced was the drop based purely on max dlvl or mlvl, not averaging either. That causes the fact that all those shallow depth monsters were as likely to drop deep items as any deeper monster. Snaga at dlvl 99 had to pass only one level OoD check to create The One, while in older versions that would be like 40 level OoD check. I think that was reversed in 3.2.But my instinct is the same as yours (shocking, I know). Ringil, however is just rare, not deep item. It isn't nowhere close in rarity to The One in games all things considered. In old days I used to find Ringil almost as often as I found Thorin (which was practically every game). It was so common to me that I wondered why people claim that it is rare, when I had evidence to prove otherwise. I think Bladeturner got some tweak, PDSM depth was changed or something, which would explain it being found every now and then in recent games.Comment

Wow!
The speed DSM is probably an end-game armor, or close to it! Definitely looking forward to the AAR.Comment

I agree. I have +24 speed without using any RoS. That means I can easily have what I need with just one RoS or, as it looks like, with perfect saving throw and low failure haste I could go right now against Morgoth, if I just get a few more levels (18/180 CON gives me just 635HP, I'm only at clvl 35 at this point. Under million turn win almost guaranteed without trying to get low turncount).
Funny thing is that I needed Ring of Flame to fill basic4 with Thorin and with that DSM. Ringil doesn't really need another brand, but it doesn't hurt either.Comment

I like this - it's nice that occasionally things work out so that a humble ring of flames fills a crucial resistance hole, when you don't actually need the brand."Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

I have noticed that the "Scroll of Deep Descent" uses the same icon as the "Scroll of Treasure/Object Detection", at least with the David Gervais tileset.
I don't know whether this has been reported.
I am playing the v 3.2.0 from the rephial main page.Comment

The bmp and prf being distributed with 3.2 aren't up to date.
