    Borg page is back up

    Hi everyone.

As many know, my ISP deleted my borg webpages about the same time my laptop crashed. I did not have any backups. I finally got moved into my new place in St George, Utah, and got a new webspace. I will host the borg related pages on my business site.

Right now, the page is up and the files are available. The page itself is seriously out of date but the important links work.

I'd like to see a new page up there. If anyone has some special skills in web development and want to donate some code to pretty up the pages, I'd appreciate it.

Any graphic artists out there? I would really like to see the official @ guy get outfitted with a couple of borg implants yet still keeping it simple.

Right now you can find the borg at www.innovapain.com/borg

Welcome back - while you've been away there have been numerous requests for a borg for the 3.1.x versions, so you've definitely been missed.

Unfortunately the amount of code refactoring (esp to the player and cave structures) means there will be a substantial amount of rewriting, I fear. Perhaps for 3.3!

Bookmarked. Your page is in much better shape than mine (which isn't even in same server anymore). Mine have been "under construction" for something like 10 years now

Question: do you have plans to upgrade borg for 3.2 when it is up? Based of how few tickets are left before release that day isn't far away anymore.

As long as there won't be some big changes and a quick leap to 3.3, then I can get the borg up. The problem is when the game is changing so rapidly. I write borg code to deal with an update then find out that the update is not well received so the function is removed a week later.

I'll tinker on it over the next few weeks.

            Hi All,
I've been playing rogue-likes since Larn, then Moria, then Angband (always vanilla).
I've recently started playing with Andrew's Borg and I have a question. I couldn't find the apwborg while Andrew was moving and switching ISP's. I tried KeldonBorg for 2.8.3 in the meantime. It flew thru the levels, it could be level 9 in about a min. I had several lvl 50 chars in just a couple of days.

APWBorg seems to be much smarter, but in 3 days of running non-stop the highest char is lvl 29 (only mages). Much lvl 20+ chars have 10-14 mil turns.

He seems to spend all of his time moving one space, resting 4, and repeating that thru-out the dungeon. I'm wondering if I have all of the parameters set up correctly. Could someone look at my borg.txt to see if I can remove all of this moving and waiting (especially since mages can mah for hidden doors)...

Log attached for example of move counts also.

Thanks in advance to any who helps me and thank you to Andrew for the countless hours you must have spent creating this wonderful little creature for us to stare at.

EDIT: After looking at the code, it appears to the "Spastic Searching" routine. Will searching actually find doors that don't appear when a mage casts mah? If not, could we just cast mah instead of searching so much? I'm sorry if all of this has been addressed thru the years, but I couldn't find anything off-hand regarding this.

Ok, this is a nice borg, but I have a question about Continuous Play mode. It says in the BORGREAD file that to enable this mode you have to turn on cheat_live. However, when I do this and the borg dies, he just revives in town (with borg mode off) like would normally happen with cheat_live on.

Am I doing this wrong or missing something here?

I will add this to the 'checkout' list. Spastic_searching can really help the borg. But IIRC, he is supposed to get bored and leave a level instead of using so much time searching. I will double check to make sure he is not using so much time. 14mill turns is orders of magnitude more than what it ought to be. There have been winners with 19million turns.

I spent the weekend updating the borg to work with the most recent version (312). There were +300 compiler errors. It now compiles and only takes one step before unhooking. I have to do a lot of work to get the new items added and accommodate for the 'effects'. Nothing looks too nasty yet. I hope the event handler was not messed with too much ::glaring eyes::

Fastest borg winner I got was High-Elf rogue with about 1.5M turns. That borg must have had some seriously lucky start with speed-items. Something like BoS+10 & Ringil & RoS very very early.

At that time real players used to use way way over million turns to win the game, so that was something extraordinary. Too bad I don't know what did he find and when.

We might be misunderstanding one another. Upon the death of the borg, continuous play mode will respawn a brand new, clevel one borg and he will start in town, naked. Just as if you started a new character yourself.

Is this what you were expecting or did you think that continuous play mode would do something different.

To test this. I installed a fresh copy of angband309, downloaded the borg windows file from my site. I copied the angband.exe file from my site into the new angband directory. I copied the borg.txt file into the /user directory. I started a new character (female, human, warrior), and immediately change the cheat_live to yes. I let the borg run for a while then used ^aj to jump to depth 10 where is quickly died. He respawned in town as a level one 1/2E ranger. This is what I would expect.

Ya, and too bad my old ISP deleted the Winners page. It listed the various winners and the turn numbers.

I think the problem is that "with borg mode off". If it turns that off, then it isn't continuous. I have a vague memory that I fought with this same issue once too. Can't remember what the solution was.

Hm, ok I tried it again and it worked just like you said. The first time I did it, however, it just started the same character back at the stairs like it normally would if you were playing and had cheat_live on. The character was still level 2 and had all his equipment.

I'm trying to think of why this could be. Is it because I had turned on cheat_live after activating borg mode? Is it because I had stopped the borg a few times to look at his stuff? I may have to do some investigating to figure this out.

At any rate, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate all your hard work on this. It's really nice for all us nerds who have nothing better to do on a rainy day. =)

Thanks for the reply Dr. White and again thanks for the countless hours I'm sure you have in this.

How about a flag in Borg.txt regarding the spastic searching? I actually tried to comment it out and recompile but having never compiled before, it get real ugly, real quick.

FYI, current ranger when I got home from work was searching endlessly on lvl 33 at chr lvl 31 and a turn count of 35.3 mil. My borg is searching waaay to much.

                            Thanks,

That is so weird. Usually the spastic search will go on for a short time (about 100 turns or so) then he quits. It is level dependent too so he will do it much less when low clevel.

Borg312v2 update: It compiles and runs. I need to add the new items (shrooms and such) and rework many of the effects (heals and such). It looks like the ID process was revamped. Why are the stairs not being recognized by the borg? Did you move them out of the Feature and into something different?

BTW, You guys are killing me. Who decided it was a good idea to move torch fuel turns to the item->timeout instead of old school item->pval. I'm going to program the borg to spit on the pizza of the guys who decided to do that.
