    Color scheme bug

    Hello.

I was just killed by Lesser Balrog that I thought is Nalfeshnee. Lesser Balrog is now same color as much much much less dangerous Nalfeshnee.

I thought that whole reason to revised colors was to make monster distinct to each other.

Version is 3.1.2 r1971 This needs to be fixed.

Sorry, that's probably my fault. When all the uniques went purple, and non-unique purple monsters were changed to a different colour, so that purple always means unique. This was one of the changes which didn't work - happy for lesser balrogs to change colour, as long as it's not purple. What about slate? Is there a slate U?

Yep, Vrocks (assuming "slate" is the light grey color).

Maybe we could make the Nalfeshnee dark green? Or the Balrog could be dark grey, since they're supposed to be shadowy creatures IIRC.

Balrogs are creatures of shadow and fire. IMO they should have both darkness storm and fire breath as weapons too.

Nalfeshnee breaths fire and both balrogs breath fire too. Red is fire-based monster color. This immediately alerts of type of monster. Red and shades close to red.

Bright red instead? R instead of r? Same for Greater Balrog obviously. How about dark purple? p instead of r? In my screen that looks like it could be good choice.

Emperor Wights too which needs to be different color than Barrow Wights. For this I think barrow wights need different color. Also Nexus Q needs some other color than red too. I vote for Purple (P) for Barrow Wights and Nexus Q.

The color change to make all uniques purple was IMO a step backwards in UI.

Smaug the Violet, Ar-Pharazon the Amethyst, Ancalagon the Violet, The Nine Riders of the Purple Sage, Fundin Lilac-Cloak...They all lack a little je ne sais quoi.

I completely agree. Except perhaps for that bit which looks like french. I'm not too sure about that..

              Me too. :-)

Older uniques were distinct enough, no reason to make them all violet.

My last playthrough I hacked in a semi-multi-hued effect for uniques and reclaimed purple for regular usage. For each base colour I had a lookup table of 2 alternate (and similar) colours- really ugly code, but it did the job...

Just to throw some more fuel to the fire.

Tarrasque, Saruman are not purple but are multi-colored

Troll Chieftans are purple when they shouldn't be.

The move to all purple was decided because of people complaining about certain uniques blending in with much less dangerous monsters. Ungoliant and Huan are the most obvious culprits. Making them distinct was good. It may not need to have been done for *all* the uniques. Just a couple repeat offenders would probably have sufficed, but meh. I don't care much anyway.

The unused color for demons is the dark blue color that Pazuzu abandoned. I wouldn't mind making both balrogs this color. I tend to avoid both anyway.

It holds true for most of the uniques with escorts, actually; many of them would blend in.

What about highlighting the uniques? That's clearly feasible because you can highlight @.
