    delete.me files

    So,

in the year 2009, is there any reason to still have these around ?
Their presence bothers and I would prefer to just not have them at all.
Are there still unzippers that would not bother creating a folder if there arent any files for that folder ?

IIUC this was always a Windows problem. In recent nightlies d_m wrote a platform-independent mkdir function that enables us to create any missing directories during init_angband, so we've got rid of the delete.me files in trunk. grep for create_dirs and you could probably just pull in the code wholesale.

Yes, it is an inherent quality of tar, to only package files, not directories.
