question on p_class.txt format

Hi,
being an absolute beginner in the Angband source code, I have a question on the start-equipment entries ("E:...") in the p_class.txt file:
Why does an entry specify the tval (as text) AND the name of the object of the equipment object? Is the name alone not enough?

No the name alone is not enough. Some names are not unique. (The "Potion of ..." "Scroll of ..." portion is not included in the name).
