    Comp 172

    Competition 172 is up -- it's a half-ogre street fighter from the freshly-minted Cthangband 5.0.0!

    This is not the easiest variant to get up and running. If you're a windows person, the installer should work for you, but you may be confused by the console version if you haven't played a GCU build before. You have to copy the downloaded savefile to drive:\users\<your user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Cthangband\save\SAVEGAME.

    If you are a mac or linux person, you are probably not going to have much luck building from source. (I gave up but didn't try very hard.) You can instead use wine. For OS X people, you can easily get this via homebrew, doing brew install wine.

    Here is how I wined:

    Code:
    $ wget http://www.gratisgames.webspace.virginmedia.com/files/Cthangband-500-Windows-Install.exe
    $ wine Cthangband-500-Windows-Install.exe
    [...]
    $ cd ~.wine/drive_c/users/<your username>/Local Settings/Application Data/Cthangband/save
    $ wget http://angband.oook.cz/compo-saves/172
    $ mv 172 SAVEGAME
    $ cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Cthangband
    $ wineconsole --backend=curses Cthangband.exe
    I'm not sure how we're going to score this one yet, but let's see if we can get at least one winner, shall we!

    I forgot to mention - I had to download MSVCR120.dll and dump it in the system32 dir to get the game to start.

      So I've got it running but have a new problem, where's the game keep the damn savefile?

      Edit: Found it Users/Win 7/AppData/Local/Cthangband/save
      Why does windows always like keeping files in strange places...

        so how about Windows 8? not finding application data folder for the save file...

        edit: okay, show hidden was unchecked, now I can find
        users/me/appdata/local
        but no cthangband there...

        edit: on a hunch, I ran cthangband once and quit and looked again, and there it was! good to go now.

        edit: one more hiccup, was having trouble loading the savegame until I realized what you stated above... I had to rename 172 to SAVEGAME

        also, annoying all the characters floating around the screen... makes it hard to read the screen

        also, how do I learn my spells?

          I only know the very basics of Wine edit: and terminals /edit, so... How do I find the system32 dir and how do I copy the dll into it?

            Try starting a character, saving, then searching your hard disk for a file called SAVEGAME

              getting there... wish the screen would flush properly instead of leaving stray characters around...

              figured out that to learn a spell you have to go into town store 9 and 'r'esearch

                On my two computers (OS X and Linux) Wine is in my home folder: "Wine Files" in OS X and "~/.wine" in Ubuntu. Note that this last is a hidden file so you have to use "ls -a" to see it.

                Inside that folder is drive_c, which is the fake Windows drive. The file structure there is analogous to Windows Vista or XP, so system32 should be in the Windows folder.

                  Sorry it took so long, but the comp ladder is sorting properly now, and we have actual win conditions on the comp!
