@Sky--class in 4.2 that you will like

Paladin. Yes, the healing spell is insanely expensive. But in 4.1 and earlier, this was the paladins only exceptional spell. Yes, he eventually got TO and Detection, but there are other ways to cover those, nearly as effectively.

No longer. TO and Detection are gone, along with rFire+rCold. (Actually, I miss that one a *lot* more!) Replacing them are 4 powerful spells:
    * Clairvoyance. This was only a priest spell in the past, and it's a gamechanger if you don't have an Arkenstone.
    * Temp Slay Evil. This turns any good big dice weapon into an endgame weapon. And with something like a +2 Attacks MoD, it's ridiculous.
*Temp *Slay Demon*. This is more specific. But it makes clearing demon pits a breeze, and turns almost any demon into a target.
    * Single Combat. Crazy strong. It prevents summoning, and teleport away/level

yeah i tried to level up a paladin, but got nowhere.

rFire/Cold is incredibly useful to protect your scrolls and potions from getting destroyed, and being a protection spell, idk why it got removed.

i suspect that the slay evil spell is unbalanced; even without randart, just a mace of disruption of extra attacks.

Carry !rFire (and !rCold if you have room. Otherwise just take a few when you have a specific opponent in mind, nanely Itangast or Huan.)
As for unbalanced... a MoD +2 attacks will do about 7/5x19/20 more damage than a MoD (HA) with the same damage bonus. (The 19/20 multiplier is from losing blessed melée.) With my current kit, that means 850 damage vs evil. That's a lot, but not so much compared with the randart damage that regularly shows up around here.

D'ob! I just killed Sauron with a dagger of gondolin! Total cost: 4 Heal, 1 *Heal*, 1 !rMana. The fight did seem a little long...

I ended up fighting Morgoth in the arena. You need plenty of supplies because he does a ton of damage--roof caves in more in the limited space, and you can't retreat to heal. And he doesn't spend turns summoning.
On the plus side, the risks are entirely predictable.
This time I did use the MoD (HA)
