What Pete said: buy some oil before taking the stairs, upgrade with sling or whatever you find.

And the idea is not to throw flasks at every icky thing you see; the flasks are reserved for emergencies or high value targets. Ood scout, Grip/Fang, that kind of thing. Random icky thing gets magic missiled, if oom, retreat and rest up.

But my emphasis in op was on "exploring": staying close to the stairs, if the vicinity is clear changing level rather than running off far is good for the fledgling mages well being.

That works. So do a couple ?PD, some shot or !oil, and a scroll of blessing.

Emptying a wand of magic missiles into 1 of the dog uniques is probably enough for clvl 5

I was on DL98 and trying to clear a demi-vault, teleporting out everything from behind a corner, when i finally see a Kelek's, and caught in the excitement i walked towards it to grab it, and Feagwath manastormed me ... poor gnome with only 289hp.
