    4.2.1 Mage WIP

    After getting my first 4.2.1 win with a paladin, I decided to go back and give a high elf mage a try again.

    I am down to DL18, and things are off to a decent start with a wand of drain life, and a broad sword that is a pretty solid stat stick with r-pois and r-disenchant this early.

    Looks like some very useful starting equipment. Worth using scrolls of recharging for the drain life wand as they are much less likely to destroy it.
    Next time I'd suggest putting more points into starting Int as it really helps the available spell points.

        Yet another stupid (careless) death... Thinking I could take down the nightcrawler. I think that I am done with mages for the time being, just didn't feel as fun as other classes, and way too much dependence on con eqp, even with it maxed out. And, just feels like it takes forever to burn tough/unique enemies down.

          Just curious, but why weren't you using Mana Channel and Mana Storm to take out uniques. This is over 600 pts per round of unresistable area effect damage.
          The joy of a high level mage is that you only fight what you want to fight, and in the best circumstances for you.

            Agreed, you don't want to be hand-to-hand with nightcrawlers with any class, let alone a mage. Best to TO these and pick more lucrative targets. As you say, Mana Channel is immensely powerful, combined with Mana Bolt and Mana Storm. Shock Wave/Blast is also good for stunning and the other spell which knocks enemies back a few squares.

              Thanks to mana channel and mana attacks 4.2.x mage is very powerful. But what *really* makes mage *unstoppable* is in my opinion Thrust Away spell. I'm curious why this spell is rarely mentioned in these forums, don't people realize what you can do with it? You can keep out of melee combat without the unpredictability of phase door, you can (sort of) clear other monsters from between you and your main target, and unlike dimension door it's an attack that does serious damage and stuns(!). Enemies sometimes resist the effects but that's rare and even Morgoth usually spends most of the final fight at the end of a corridor, dizzily looking at light blue starts. Yes, it stuns Morgoth.
