    trying 4.13

    Hello,

Its been several years since I played any Angband (2011 was my last log-in here, circa v3.3 IIRC), and I just gave Morgoth a beating using a Dunaden warrior. It's great that the game is still being maintained and improved, and playing after so long meant relearning a lot about the game. In particular, I didn't have any in-game or in-player monster memory, but strangely, I remembered the drolem.

Here were a few things that I think really stand out about Angband as a game

    - complex decisions with hard consequences (e.g. permanent death)
Is it possible to get rid of the OOD monster to get into that vault? My home and inventory is full - should I keep the ?Acquirement for later or use it now at DL40.

    - the sense of imagination required to play the game due to timeless ASCII graphics and really fantastic flavor writing. (I tried the Shockbolt graphics but just couldn't make it work).
    Light brown o = weak snaga. Light blue o = a fierce Uruk-Hai
Beware the shimmering and purple Ws!
You hear a door slam open!
Omens of Death haunt this place...

    - crazy levels of gear optimization
How can I get to +20 speed AND still have sustain strength and rNether?

    - a new adventure at each level
I really love the new (for me) level and vault designs. The scariest, by far, is the lava demon levels - I never even tried to clear one of those. Also, Maia (Angel) pits are a really nice flavor touch.

Let's hope that in another 30 years this game will still be around and being improved!

    Welcome back!
“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

      Welcome back!

I returned to the game quite recently myself after a very long break, so I'm by no means an expert, but here are my two cents:

Angband is indeed a very addictive game and requires lots of thinking. I especially struggle with this "diving" strategy (I think I'll always be a boring grinder), levels 15-25 and inventory management. My home seems to get full quite quickly ("Hmmm, I don't need this artifact right now, but as soon as I replace my cloak and shield, I might...")

I strongly suggest you try random artifacts if you haven't yet. I think it brings lots of replay value to the game.
