Adventures of Dive deep Hobbit Ranger

The little hobbit that could. All the way to DL51 did the little hobbit crash dive, finding only two lowly artifacts, one which served him very well: Pauragen, dropped by bullroarer I believe, (lightning beam activation is great early on for a weak little hobbit), until FrAct gloves were found, and then the pathetic and miserable Evalgil found lying around DL24 which he reluctantly bore into the depths for it's see invisible, leaving behind a great hammer of acid.

Starting stats for this adventurer were:

    6 pts STR
    6 pts DEX
    4 pts INT
    4 pts CON

He had a very smooth and enjoyable start after very nearly dying to Fang and others. Once he survived the early skirmishes and magic missile came on board it was off to the races. Early on during a crash dive he picked up a good ring of the mouse on DL14 which he would wear all the way to DL51 and is still wearing after raiding an X shaped 4 chambered vault. This ring really made it possible. And the way things proceeded on DL51 was very, very fortunate in one sense, because while he did not find any great gear (or even good gear, really), he found stealth items that complimented the ring of the mouse nicely.

Do have a gander at my little hobbit's stealthy adventures trawling too deep for his britches, where tiptoeing around Smaug and others hoping to find some special items but to no avail. He did not despair, though, steadfastly descending deeper. The other gear he did find a lot of were wands of drain life which allowed him to dispatch the dangerous people found at those depths. There were some good scary fights in there, too!

The adventure picks up where our hobbit brazenly decides to read a scroll of deep descent after having crash dived to DL39. On DL44 he finds himself whoah-ly out of depth, but puts trust into his ring of the mouse.

If you'd like to fast forward to his contemplations of Smaug and then, to his own surprise, the vault (I originally had no intentions of poking around the likes of Vargo, but when my stealth reached Legendary status I said, hell, why not give it a try?) click here: https://youtu.be/p7hUaiekAco#t=52m18s

Misadventures of crash diving half troll warrior

Death is imminent after crash diving eleven levels down, yet we have no choice but to keep descending into the depths. It's getting mighty gloomy down here: our every step is haunted by all manner of beings living and undead who seek unrelentingly to destroy us. Things are getting desperate. Our adventurer very nearly meets his end on multiple occasions:

I'm now 24k turns into my game and am on DL85. This, umm..., a bit dicey, but I loaded 6 initial points to CON at character start and found a lot of con potions so at least I am a healthy fledgling warrior too deep.

Brecht the Diver posts his record to the ladder.

I watched a little at DL 56. Crazy fight with ranger chieftain, sorceror, berserker, ancient blue and green dragons, nearly at once. You probably should have died then (and did get down to 48HP.)

Okay, well, that @ died in the final fight when I continued engaging in melee at about 550hp or so. I figured I'd have to take some risks if I was going to make my 4 *healigns* last. M mana stormed me to -4 health.

So in my quest to win the game in less than 30k turns I've been buying scrolls of mapping at the start and trying to crash dive as fast as I can but I keep dying (duh) cause I dive too quickly without picking up anything good on the way down. Well, finally I got an @ with some luck in his bones. He's doing even better than I was hoping! (I was sort of acknowledging some early good fortune would be needed in order to set a low turn count, and I have finally been rewarded after a string of rather lousy luck!)

It started on DL13 when I found average lamellar armor. On DL18 Grishnak dropped me a heavy xbow of might (X5) (+8, +9). Somewhere in the late teens or early 20s I drank a potion that took me from CL15 to CL30. Been awhile since I've done that. Good fortunes kept coming, though! In a small vault on DL27 found a small shield of Elvenkind <+2> rShards. Nothing too crazy, but boots of speed <+7> on DL32 just lying around in a nearby room during my crash dive to the stairs. Mind you I've found all this stuff crashing the stairs with a staff of mapping and also got fortunate picking up a rod of treasure detection, but only grabbing nearby loot on way to stairs.

Very next (DL33) level a diagonal non permavault 7-8 feeling and a blue dragon drops me a +21 rapier with lots of slays and telepathy, enabling me to squash the vault and take two rings of dam (+9) and (+11) and two potions of augmentation! Sub 30k seems a very real possibility this run. My turncount isn't anything crazy so far, around 8600 on DL33, but I should be able to really hit the stairs now.

          wish me luck!

Things were going smoothly. Stairs > stairs > stairs. Stat gain. Occasional good object. But the one wand of TO I found didn't have many charges to start with. I wasn't too worried, I'll just recharge it when it's empty. *BANG* "There was a bright flash of light! The recharge backfires! You have no more wands of TO."

Great...: still diving somewhere in the DL80s without TO. I spent a fair bit of time on DL85 trying to kill an undead pit. I wasn't sure what to do about Maeglin, though. But then remembered I was carrying scrolls of *destruction* for just such occasion. Once he was out of the way it was just a matter of leading a great wyrm of many colors to the other side of the level and then self TOing back to east side again to continue working on the demi and arch liches and the nightwings/crawlers. Gained three levels there, but still no TO. Finally, on DL86 a stone giant drops me a rod of OT. Still, trying to TO Glaurung, Ancalagan and Huan when they are all coming at me at once is quite tricky when there is only a long hallway to bounce around in waiting for it to recharge.

Here is the latest dump: most notable find is the longbow of Frodrin as it has 2X power, 1X shooting speed and is branded with weak acid and has +22 to dam. Makes Belthronding look pretty pathetic. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=22103

https://youtu.be/bjrHggkfl1s This video is pretty long, but if you jump to just about any place in the video there is something exciting/dangerous happening. It was pretty much dicey going the entire time I was on DL85. Basically, danger lurked 'round every corner. Also, here is a highlight from DL86: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjrHggkfl1s#t=67m33s Starting to run low on healing potions.

More excitement from dungeon level 90! It seems the deeper I go the worse the weapons are and the better the armors. All the good weapons are found in the DL30s through DL40s.

I applied some interesting tactics in order to save turns as well as making my raiding of a vault safer. Also interesting in this video is how I take some risks in order to avoid using my precious healing potions!

Sorry for the annoying audio; when I bring the computer closer to speak into the mic it makes annoying sounds.

You may want to watch the video at 1.5X speed instead of normal speed. I post links for different highlights throughout the video below but the action is pretty much nonstop after the 8minute mark. It's pretty much good stuff all the way until around 36minute mark at which point I raid the vault without much drama.

              I kill a sleeping Nexus Q! That doesn't happen every day: https://youtu.be/7XfTLpSBuY0#t=5m

Things start to get interesting: https://youtu.be/7XfTLpSBuY0#t=8m

I destruct Maeglin again with a bit of luck!: https://youtu.be/7XfTLpSBuY0#t=11m

https://youtu.be/7XfTLpSBuY0#t=21m45s to jump to the part where I use _destruct to save turns; also a minute later the witch-king of Angmar tries to kill me and I try to kill him back without using any healing potions.

I don't seem to learn: in the same spot I nearly let the WKofAng kill me a Nightwalker pulls the same stunts: https://youtu.be/7XfTLpSBuY0#t32m25s

Anyway, I'm still a Ranger. I'd be struggling if it wasn't for this bow.

It is done! Won the game in under 30k turns. Some interesting tidbits:

I drank a black potion after defeating Sauron, not sure what it could be (if not !Enlightenment). It was a potion of Dexterity that took me to max Dex. Go figure that.... (a lot of !augmentations is how!)

I won the game in the same number of turns as Everest is above sea level in feet: 29029.

Before the fight I hemmed and hawed over what gear setup: ultimately deciding on a dwarven armor for the strength and con, "Trickery for the Dex sustain and swapping my shields between one that has fire immunity and hold life and another with +4 DEX for the increased melee damage.

The last 20+ levels gave me crap-all in gear---like, nothing (a speed ring +11 was prolly best gear, and a good-AC telepathy helm from Sauron). But that misfortune was made up by the great fortune of Mr. M playing nice. He hasn't done that in awhile. Sure makes it a lot easier when he's not summoning Maeglin, Huan and the Terrasque! He didn't mana storm much either. He didn't bring the ceiling down upon my head. It was very smooth fight. Much easier than I was anticipating. I only had two rods of TO, so it is very fortunate that he took it easy on me. I did use one ?Banishment at the very end which was pretty key.

Oh, there was one other thing: Kamul, summoned by Sauron, dropped a good "Trickery which was very good since I had forgotten about sustains for the final fight.

Also awesome was getting into these diagonal-favorable-line-of-sight corridors M had made earlier--and just getting super lucky that he came up the corridor letting me get free shots on him with my slay evil arrows good for 600+ per round.

The whole fight starting in town: https://youtu.be/yY2BEBGZY_Q#t=35s

Grats on the win! Less than 30k turns... wow... that is impressive indeed.

I don't think I've ever had more than 1,100 HP. I'm at 904 with my Hobbit Warrior atm. Need to get my CON up a bit.

Welp, I'm at it again. This run is going exceedingly well. No speed items, but all the finds I needed despite *crash* diving and not exploring levels.

                          FrAct--check
                          rBase--check
                          rPois--check
                          Ring of Dam--check
                          good light weapon--check
                          see invisible--check
                          telepathy!--check

My strategy was simple: I got lucky finding a ring of pois in the Black Market and a good artifact rapier so I bought a bunch of ?mapping and just beelined to the stairs and teleported if they weren't nearby and then proceeded to pick up very good items.

Sorry, I just saw this post. I should have clarified. The subject of this thread says hobbit ranger, but the speed run attempts were done with Half Troll Warrior.

Continuing to crash dive. Find myself way too rapidly on DL82. Had found a wand of TO around DL60 but only 6 charges so I hem and haw as to whether I kill the colbran with seeker wounding arrows or TO it. Since I only have a few charges, I figure I better save them for high value targets and hope some other metal object is destroyed. I don't need to continue this story. You are all familiar with it, Colbran casts a bolt of lightning and your wand of TO is destroyed... Shortly after my staff of speed backfired when attempting to recharge it and no potions of speed.

But, as things were starting to look dire again, running around teleporting self, trying to keep away from all the nasties Ar Pharazon summoned like Dracolich and Hurumaur of Dur and to pick up wounding arrows and trying to finish off Ar PHarazon who keeps summoning nasties... at one point I was running down a corridor from Hoaramur of Dir who was hot on my tails to inspect some object in a room when, I approach it, Bingo, wand of TO 11 charges! Two levels after I pick up a ring of speed <+11> on DL75! No vaults since the only one I raided on DL30something, but still the dungeon is providing and keeping me alive. Most of my artifacts have been dropped.
