    Where my !CON at?

    EDIT: every game I play CON maxes last. Are !CON potions more rare than the other stat potions?

    So my HT Paladin started with 3 INT. It is now CL44 on DL87 and maxed INT (18/100) as well as all other stats except CON. Wanna guess what my CON is? It's 14. Yes, 14. Kinda puts a wrench in my Sub 40k dreams. Currently at 36.4K turns trying to pull some !CONs from an A pit. I have everything I need to fight the bosses, 3 of the best immunities, good enough damage to evil and very good damage to everyone else, all the books except WoG and 31 base speed.

    Looking at the gamedata files I see they are no more rare than the others. Still from experience I always feel they are more rare. E.g. I remember recalling to level 99 with less than hp than Saurons Mana Storm hurts for (forced descent, I forgot recall will recall to last level + 1). Had to kill/loot a lot of stuff to gain more CON at that level before being able to take on Sauron.

    Probably you tend to start with low CON compared to your main stats so CON needs more potions to max out. Also if yuo use a few stat-swap potions to main stats you may get even more behind

      Thanks for looking that up Thrallbee. Remember that my INT started at 3 (well behind my starting CON) and it maxed out when my CON was 14, so even if there were a couple swap potions against CON's favor, this is still a huge bias towards !INT. Shoulda collected !Toughness when I saw them.

      Well, got my CON up to a whopping 16 now. Fortunately two rings of power provide +7 to CON and swapping out my speed/WIS shield with a CON shield helps matters, and I may go with a good Dwarven armor over my current artifact one to bring my HP into the 800s.

      Every so often I find armor with a slay on it, but I can never justify wearing it. I have one such piece sitting at home currently.

      One other question I have: I'm wearing an amulet of ESP, and nearby are 9 mushrooms of ESP. I'd pick them up if their duration was affected by my speed but it doesn't appear to be. At 31 speed they only last ~60 turns, same for @23 speed. Is this displaying correctly? I was really hoping moving faster would mean their effect would last longer. Then I could use them for the final battle and put something more useful around my neck.

        @Grotug: it's not your absolute stat value that matters; it's your base stat value. Starting with 10 base CON can mean a long slog. In a case like that, it may well be worth using a ring of CON (+6) as a stopgap (and a ring of speed on your other hand if necessary.)

          True, but it was slightly frustrating to start with almost no INT (3 INT vs 10 CON) and max out on INT long before my CON.

          In other news, I set a personal best in beating the game in 33,002 turns (playing with randarts, deep descent and disconnected stairs). Anyone know what the fastest Vanilla win is?

          If it's true ego items get a boost in artifactless games, I think I may try an artifactless game next.

          Some thoughts on my HT/Paladin game:

          1. AC is king. I've said it before, but really. I had base +12 speed until DL99 where it climbed to +15, but I had 260AC and always had high AC for my character and dungeon level. I'd even forego less important resistances like shards in favor of better AC, and (for me) it was worth it. I forewent pBlind the entire game in favor of an AC helmet. I never had pBlind. When you are a super tank with Telepathy, pBlind just isn't that important.

          I had good/very good damage output for my CL/DL most of the game except the end. Sauron dropped a very good unHoly Trinity weapon (1300 dam to the three that matter) but I only got to use it on one monster because while I was waiting for recall I killed an Osyluth who dropped a MoD of double extra attacks that did better base damage for Morgoth.

            Um. Hard to claim AC is king when you're wielding a MoD +2 attacks doing 530 dam/turn. Damage per turn pretty much rules. Certainly if I were playing I'd pick a speed ring instead of that useless branding ring. Actually, speed +damage (and some alternative source of CON/DEX) would have been my choice there. But you can't argue with a win. Congrats.

              I used the MOD for exactly one fight. Wherease I was ruling the dungeons with huge AC most of the game.

                I've also experienced a few games where one stat was way behind the others, but not always CON. But CON is always a good candidate because no class has CON as a primary stat. Usually you increase STR/DEX or STR/INT or STR/WIS (note that STR is probably never behind, as every character needs to start with a decent value to be able to carry stuff without being slowed down) at birth, because you get much more benefits from a 18/something STR/INT/WIS/DEX than CON.

                Note that whenever a stat is way behind, you can use the corresponding stat swap potion to balance your stats. In your case, you could keep a few potions of toughness to bring CON back on par with the other stats. The problem is that these stat swap potions only show up early, when using them is probably not recommended because the drain could apply to a vital stat that is far from being maxed out. So you need to waste a few slots in the home to keep them until your stats are high enough.

                Also remember that once a stat attains 18, quaffing a potion that increases the stat (even a stat swap potion) will yield more than 1 point, so it's always useful to keep at least one stat swap potion for that moment.
