    It's time to turn off level feelings

    DL31, that's 1550'. And what do we find there lying on the floor, unguarded? Only one of the best non artifact items in the entire game. And the level feeling? A paltry 6. Boots, my friends. Iron Shod Boots. <+3> <+9>. Maybe this ironman isn't doomed after all. Now.. what did I do with the ring of FrAct? Oh yeah, I left it behind because I'm wearing FrAct boots. /facepalm. Good thing I held onto the staves of confusion instead of the ring Hey, they did save my butt when squished between a hydra and a dark elf early on, though. You simply can't do anything when you're confused and afraid, except confuse the others and wait for your confusion to wear off.



    Now the question is, do I wear the boots and rely on my <+4> Infravision amulet to keep me from being paralyzed? Or do I wait to find another source of FrAct before wearing them. HMMMMM. I assume carrion crawlers are detected by infravision?

    To confirm the point about turning off level feelings I just found a rod of TO on DL46 feeling level 4-4. My main objective was to collect consumables, not key equipment towards victory.

    Now I just need to find a good weapon and I will be off to the races. I found castus of power (+5, +8) and dwarven shield (+4, +4) and dex ring <+6> so my damage output is good. I also just replaced my ring of DAM +9 with a ring of slaying, (+9, +9), not sure if I've ever done that before.

      I've been arguing against level feelings for years! IMO they're a distraction and just leave you wondering what you're missing out on.

        Yes, I was thinking back on you saying that to me awhile ago in another thread when I made this thread

        Well, it's finally come, the point where I have too many good items I need to choose from. My HT Warrior Ironman run is going eerily well. Never had a game go this buttery smooth. There was one point where I detected evil, just to be on the safe side..., and a dracolich I TO'd earlier was about 6 clicks down a hallway from me (no rNether and my health was at like 400something) I didn't even think about TO failure, I just quickly zapped without thinking about bringing my health up first, but the rod did its job.

        The levels have been very tame. Once Time hounds which I banished. Once a room jam packed full of s drujs that I banished. Very few OOD monsters, even though I've been clearing levels and hit some small vaults. I rarely have to TO monsters. My damage output is insane, even though I'm only on DL61. I'm doing 743 with an Undead/Demon slayer and am 525 vs everyone with a swap Katana of <+2> of Extra Attacks. Base Speed is +21 overweighted. Getting the damage up so high is a ring of Dam +15, a shield swap for rNexus with a good Dwarven shield (+4, +4) <+2> and castus of power (+5, +8). But Scatha dropped 2 good artifacts, one is ImmAcid alchemist gloves with +2 DEX which actually gives me better damage with the Undead/Demon slayer, but worse damage with the kill-everything-else Katana. The other artifact provides pConf and a very short recharge time on EXP restore activation, which is great, because I love killing Undead.

        However, I'm currently wearing an artifact armor of ImmFire. Comboing the armor with the ImmAcid Alchemist gloves would mean I never lose staves/scrolls again so long as I were to keep it. A good thing in Ironman. Yet, I have this amazing castus of power (+5, +8) that I am so loathe to give up. (+8) on Castus is very rare. Also on this level is a <+4> Speed dragon rCold armor dropped by someone. I need the rCold if i want to wear the Dwarven shield. The pConf armor Scatha dropped gives +6 STR (which I don't need at all) and +4 DEX, which I *really* need if I ever want to get to max blows, but lacks rCold. But not sure I want to give up Fire Immunity! I also happen to know there is a single source of both fire and cold immunity in a pendant, I believe, in my randart set. I tried to reset the randarts but I got the same ones as last game.

        I often have the attitude that damage is king in warrior mode. Crushing foes so quickly they don't have the chance to blast me with something nasty is sometimes better than immunities. But maybe sacrificing a little damage for fire and acid immunity is the way to go in Ironman.

        The other reason damage output is so important is because I've been taking out Uniques without ?phasing. I haven't phased in like the last 500', and I've taken out Fundin and Saruman with relative ease. ?phases are stupidly rare in Angband, but they're given away limitlessly in the stores. I feel if my damage output goes down too much I won't be able to take on as many uniques. Plus, killing as many things as I can is my strategy for collecting good drops and leveling up quickly. I'll drop all my staves and wands nearby to take on light blue Ls (I have hLife) for some easy xp.

        I also have +4 CON Castus that sustains CON that I've been holding onto (not currently in my inventory). Lots of greater demons later on will be zapping my CON, but I may want to hold out for CON sustain somewhere else.

        There's also a very low AC armor with hLife, Telepathy, the 5 crucial base resists, rChaos and rLite on this level, but I think I am going to let it go.

        Unlike my last game, been getting consumables at a good rate: potions, ?Identifies, the good stuff. I have 5 !*healing* and 8 !Healing. I crush everything so quickly they rarely destroy potions.

        Oh, and Itanagast also dropped 38 {Holy Mights! I *really* need to let go of the idea that I am going to use my bow for killing stuff. I am a melee artist, and I shouldn't be carrying more than 40 arrows. Just seems like a waste to use the {Holy Mights on vortices or water hounds....

        I just need advice on prioritizing what to keep and what to let go.

        I copied the text from a saved randart file and pasted it into the artifact.txt field inside of the /lib in my MAC executable. But it used the same RandArts I pasted in last game. Not really sure if I'm doing it right?

        Edit: After reading my post I'm leaning towards keeping two swaps, including the weapon swap. I'm thinking of dropping the rNexus shield, 40 arrows (/sigh), the CON castus, (already on the ground), and keeping the dwarven shield and the power gauntlets for swap against hard foes that don't deal acid where the Katana will benefit a good deal. Also, when taking on a tough foe I haste self with the staff of speed, and then I swap the speed ring for the DEX ring to maximize damage. I am not currently considering dropping the DEX ring. I'm torn about letting Salir go (the pConf +4 DEX armor).

        Would love to hear what others would do in my shoes.

          Welp, Sauron fell surprisingly easy. I think I zapped rod of healing once and used a healing potion. The rune of warding against him was amazing. I think he tried to send me through the floor three times, but with forced descent on, I didn't need to cover Nexus for the fight. Haha.

          Morgy was about typical. He summoned Huan and Maeglin early on which gave me a bit of trouble because I couldn't TO either of them. Huan breathed sound on me while Morgoth I think bashed me or mana stormed me. Either way, I was left with 70 health. I used 2 !*healings*, 2 !healings and I zapped my rods of healing once or twice throughout the fight. I ended up trading my artifact bow for lorien short bow X4 for the DEX increase, but those holy might arrows eneded up doing some work, too (about 5 to 7% damage from his total). I picked up 2 rods of healing on DL99 and one on DL100 bringing my total from 2 to 5 in very short order. An A pit on DL99 was super nice, too, bringing my !*healings* from 5 to 7. I was taking down everything I thought I could handle including big Uniques leading up to the fight, but my gain of potions starting going backwards until the A pits (another A pit on DL100, too, which got me a +2 increase on my ring speed).

          So, as is always hoped for in an ironman/forced descent game, things came together in the last moments before the fights for somewhat comfortable cushion. I ended up throwing away the castus of power I had been dragging around but regretted it as I would have gotten another 30 dam or so since I picked up a helmet of telepethy and dex and the dex from the lorien bow.

          I probably should have ?Phased when Huan and P were both in LOS, but I thought I'd give them a fighting chance for a couple turns . If Huan had breathed frost instead of Sound, though, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead?

            Congrats!

            Given that iron men kill many uniques and have few vaults, the ratio should be in favour of drops.

              Congrats! That weapon is pretty much perfect for Ironman (and indeed for non-ironman): Acid brand against almost everything including Sauron for massive damage. Slay Evil vs. Morgoth for huge damage.

                Thanks! Yeah, that weapon is tailored made for the final two bosses.

                I noticed some posts on the forums saying that Warrior is at a disadvantage compared to other classes? Given how much easier I find playing HT/Warrior compared to other combos, I'd just like to put in my two cents for *not* making Warrior have an easier time with traps or whatever. It seems right to me that the class/combo that has the best damage output in the simplest of terms (easiest to play: melee is much simpler to execute or manage than spells or arrows) should have some serious drawbacks to force people towards more dynamic, less straight forward combos. As such, the drawbacks of HT/Warrior are not enough to have me playing other combos much. I'm not saying they should be made even more stark, but I don't think I'd like to see them made less so. A lot of that has to do with my preferred playstyle, though. I've also gotten better and more creative at playing around Warrior's weaknesses.

                  No close calls that game, smooth sailing to victory. Kept finding crazy good gear starting in the early DL40s and it didn't stop until about the DL80s. Then, right before I was having to face the M without an evil slay, I found some nifty boots, but lacked the speed to really use them without making compromises I didn't want to make. :P Then I found a ring of speed <+15> and holy smokes, I just made the minimum speed requirement to fight M (+20) without making any painful sacrifices to DEX. Even though I wasn't diving that fast for the first 40 dungeon levels, still managed to close out the show in relatively short order. Having good AC at the end was very nice. Also, best HP rolls I think I've ever had (1246HP at CL49). hLife most of the game meant I gained levels very quickly. rFire potions against the two end bosses were useful, too. Cold protection was key to gaining enough consumables for the fight without scumming (can't really scum in a forced descent game anyway). I didn't use any *healings* for either fight and used one !Life against M to restore my CON. I used one Glyph of warding against M which was very helpful as he and his big minions didn't break it for at least 7 of M's turns. None of my TO's failed during the fight, either, which was very key; as all summons were nasties (tough balrog uniques, horned reapers etc) except Brodda the Easterling, hah. I didn't use any of my banish or mass banish for either fights. I destructed before fighting M, but didn't use any after the fight started. I didn't tele myself, but did ?phase about 10 or so times. Overall the bosses played nice, unlike my last game.

                  And... woops, forgot to discharge the staff of holiness and drop it before fighting M!

                    Very nice when the gear set comes together like that - having better option than good ole speed boots and being able to meet the speed requirement without boots.

                        Since I still had !rFire after defeating Sauron and Ancalagon was nearby I figured might as well give it a shot since I also have pCold and pAcid. Usually he is a formidable foe, but not that time.

                          Well, this was perfectly perfect:

                          Awhile ago someone on here asked if anyone collects tradeoff stat potions in case they max out on one before another. When I first saw that post I sort of scoffed to myself as being a bit of an absurd thing to do, though perhaps a bit clever. But I always wondered if such a scenario would actually ever present itself. Well, I'm currently playing a Hobbit Rogue (holy batman this is one overpowered combo!) and I came upon 3 potions of toughness in a stack. I was like, jeeez, I'll probably never use them, but I'll store in my home for as long as there is room. Now maybe I shoulda just quaffed them right then and there given my abysmal HP at that point, but I had legendary stealth early so I really didn't see the point in having HP, even in the DL40s I felt fine at 223HP without rPois, especially when I got regen. Anyway, on my current trip to the dungeon I brought back with me a !DEX and !STR since they are both maxed to see if I could convert !Toughnesses into !Constitutions.

                              Ninja Edit as a master rogue just dropped an armor of speed! And I can wear it and still cover all my Resistances!

                              I did quaff the last of the !Toughness and it dropped one more point from dex, which is fine since I was at /210.

                              Welp, I feel compelled to post a char dump since this character is so scintillatingly powerful. A greater Q just teleported away from me after procuring for me a chaos drake and a great ice wrym. More great ice wyrms, please! I think I will chase it around the level until I'm CL50 hahahaha. With 3 immunities, 249AC (temporary) and 750+ to dragons, why not? Just picked up another ring of speed <+15> . Yep, that's the game plan. Level up using the Q and then telelevel down to DL92. mwhahahahaha, power absolute!
