    Hobbit Ranger

    So I've tired of the HT Warrior and trying Hobbit Ranger again. So far so good! I'm on DL31 and haven't had any really close calls. I bought a bow of power in the shop and am wearing a ring of the mouse because the damage is the same as a ring of slaying. Stealth is Superb which is just fantastic for controlling who I kill and who I avoid. Now I am at the first vault of my adventure (lesser) and don't really know the best strategy. Hopefully I can clear the vault one bad guy at a time, though Vargo, Tyrant of Fire is here. I may ignore him and hit the rest of the vault, but surely he is sitting on the 9 feeling item.

    EDIT: Well, much to my surprise, Vargo remained asleep as I was going around clearing the vault and I happened upon a wand of TO and walked right up to him and sent him away while he was still asleep. I did this without rFire, too, since I found a <+3> speed armor that I put on in place of my robe of permanence on my way to Vargo. Inside he was keeping watch o'er a RoS <+8>.

    EDIT: Well, I destroyed part of a greater vault when I couldn't go down the long open corridor with Dracolich waiting at the other end. So I tunneled around the side using a spell in a book and read a scroll of destruction to take out the Dracolich. I was one square closer than I needed to be. I destroyed the artifact gloves as well that he was guarding. No matter, I picked up 3 rods of TO and two wands of TO and one more <+5> INT bonus item while foraging the rest of the vault. So my SP is at 245, just need some CON now. I'm CL34 and have 232HP. :O

    I've come a long way since my last update. I'm very happy with my @. After just returning home from clearing a lesser vault I just shuffled some things around for more speed and resistances that cost me +6 stealth, bringing me down from Heroic to Superb. That makes me a little uneasy given my still pitiful CON.

    I just picked up a nice bow and pendant and now have enough STR and SP to wear some fancy armor I found earlier. The store was selling <+9> <+4> Elvenkind boots earlier for 183K. "Trickery was also in the store. Both way more than I could afford.

    I haven't been keeping wands for damage, but to kill a Vamp Lord I stood over a dragon's wand that was perfectly located and blasted him 6 times (one spell recharge). That made me wonder if I shouldn't be carrying at least one wand of deal damage. I really like the Scarab book. Scatha barely scathed me as I 4 shot/round and rCold. At some point I will find a red book that will bring my Ranger into his own. Until then, I feel I'm sitting pretty.

    Playing this Character makes me appreciate the weaknesses of HT-Warrior. I complain a lot about all the things being awake in the vaults and destroying stuff. That seems like a good game balance trade off for an @ that gets ridiculous CON. In the vault I just cleared, I used nearly all my mana to quickly tunnel through the walls and remove everything nasty while it was still asleep, including a vigilant nasty like skull druj.

    I'm giving up 6 stealth for Regen, better melee, much better AC, pStun, rShards, rDisenchant and +3 speed but I'm not sure this is a wise move. Maybe forgoing rDisenchant and +3 speed and gaining +3 stealth is the way to go, but I think for now the lure of good AC, more speed, and nearly solved character is too much. I know for an archer AC isn't that important, but I do need to melee things, too, otherwise I run out of arrows in two levels.

    EDIT: I found some Elvenkind boots <+2> <+7> in a small vault on DL67 (only treasure 5 feeling) so I think I'm gonna switch back to the <+3> Stealth armor for now. In another vault where a Hezrou dropped Tensers (yay, let the fun begin!) Osse woke up before I got to him even though I had teleported self right next to the easy access small vault, so I'd really like to get my stealth up a little more as its nerve wracking TOing him (even at +29 speed )

      I'm LVL 41 now so I get +2 extra shots with my bow. I found a Short Lorien bow <4X> (+25, +25) that does significantly more damage per arrow than my <4X> (+17, +15) <+2> extra shots bow. Does it make sense to use the short lorien bow to get more mileage from my arrows even if my total damage per round is about 40% less? It's also more fun to use the lorien bow since each arrow will be doing more damage and the monsters have a greater chance to do something to me between shots (it gets kinda boring when I pelt away at them and they do nothing but stand there and die).

        Do whatever makes the game more fun. At this point either way you'll have more than enough power to win, so you don't need to hyper-optimize your loadout.

          Yeah, I'm getting there. Finally finding !CON and the last quaffed !INT somehow took me from 217SP to 313SP (I think 18/160 to 18/186). Now I'm trying to decide if I want to swap out my <+4> INT weapon for a much better one without the INT. 313SP means I can go hog wild with my casting, though, which is pretty darn useful. I think I went from 300HP to 650HP in like two or three dungeon levels.

          I think I'm going to go with the no shots bow to get more from my arrows and to have more dramatic impact on tough baddies per hit .

            What possible use do you have to go thru so much SP as a ranger? There are only a handful of spells that you cast really regularly. The only thing I can think of that would use that much is a big hocky stick of Runes. But that's (a) cheesy and (b) unnecessary.

              I was mostly using Phase Door, Haste Self, stone to mud, Resistance, and sometimes Shield. I was relying heavily on Haste Self and Phase, to the point where I stopped carrying their consumable counterparts. In the end I had all my stats /*** except STR which was /120. Having 347SP was really nice . I could always be hasted, and gain resistances whenever I needed them and all my spells were at 5% fail. I only used the rune at the very end of the battle with Morgy to finish him off with melee. I find rune rather cheesy in general, but since I had never used it before I thought I'd give it a try, and my /*** were turning yellow (but still *** haha).

              The last item I found in the last vault I was clearing before taking on Morgy (right after I had finished off Sauron) were Mithril {Holy Mights (+25). Sauron's escort Angmar was keeping watch over them in a cubby. I wasn't expecting that.

              Not sure what I'm gonna try next. Not sure if I want to do red books or green. First time I played this game several years ago I would play has High Elf Paladin. I may try that again. That or give Gnome Mage another try. Or maybe Hobbit Paladin?

                I don't mean to clutter up the boards with my mundane games, but I decided to go with Dwarven Priest and it seems like a very powerful combo. Orb of Draining is insane. Agamataite(sp?) dropped me an awesome heavy crossbow <X6> (+22) on DL18. Does better damage than Belthronding per round, but aggravates, but has +42 to AC to compensate. Average bolt does 150 damage. Very cool! I say very cool, because it's one of those rare situations where the power of the item is worth the aggravation. I may have to ditch it later on for fear of being one-shotted, but right now it's ridiculous power and I'm pretty much invincible. I'm CL24 on DL21 with 153AC. I haven't even found a cloak yet.

                This is a good combo because it levels up quickly and has decent hitpoints for a caster (or maybe I'm just getting good rolls).Currently have 204 hitpoints and just crushed Azog and son on DL21. My mana pool is already 97 (wearing a helm of wisdom).

                Jeezus, just found an artifact pendant with +4 wisdom and other stuff and (??). Game over. I feel so invincible right now. I felt invincible before picking up the pendant Just dove a bunch of levels to DL30 and its a level 7 danger and I'm pretty sure there is nothing here that will really be much trouble (unless, of course, drolem).

                A few bolts and the 11 headed hydra falls to my bolts of slay animal I found near where Agamaite(sp?) dropped the xbow of excessive power. Man, I cannot remember surging this much power so quickly. Seems my last 20 games have been failry incremental. I'll guess I'll post a dump after I finish exploring this vault. Shoulda held onto that ring of FrAct as I just picked up a sick <+5> DEX agility gloves. This run is just crazy so far. I now have 163 SP. Okaayyy...... My saving throw is 84%.

                I found a rapier <+2> WIS but it says I'm uncomfortable using this weapon. Seems odd that a weapon made for a priest (being that it has a WIS bonus) is uncomfortable for a Priest to wield? Anyway, here is my awesome @. Muwhahahahaha.

                  Orb of draining is awesome in the midgame. It falls off later, enjoy it while it lasts.

                  Consider carrying a sling and making a swap macro, only wielding the xbow for fights in controlled circumstances and exploring with the ling equipped.

                    Not a bad idea. Especially now that my stealth is all the way up to "Good". I think I will. Though I'm liable to slip now and then and forget to swap back. What is the range of Aggravation? 30 squares in all directions from @?

                      Nice robe, too.

                      The fast level gains are one of the many reasons that Dwarf Priest is one of the uber combos. It's definitely on the short list of easiest-winning race/class combinations.

                        I'm CL28 and I have 1% fail on Heal spell and to cast it costs a whopping 7% of my mana pool. O.O That is just nuts.

                        So with pConf and native pBlind and 225SP why would I even bother carrying !Healing?

                          Aggravate has pretty limited range in recent V--around 10 squares. (It used to be 20.) And it's not a good idea for low-HP characters. Orb really trails off in strength later in the game, by which point most priests are nearly pure melee/heal in any case.

                            Because 0% is better than 1%? But yeah, priests don't need much in the way of consumables.

                              That's actually a bug. Shooters aren't supposed to get supercharged AC.
