    The good news is that I'm still alive!! I'm on DL 42 at CL34 and was just summoning and killing things. My speed is +4 and I was always getting first crack at whatever I summoned. I was setting off my last charge when I was suddenly nuked with a fireball and confused. Either the Gods had forsaken me or just run out of patience, as I found myself facing both Eol, the Dark Elf and Vargo, the Tyrant of fire! I had no staff of teleportation and only potions of CCW as I had set down my healing potions to pick up later.

    I now wish I did a screen dump prior to attempting to escape, but I was kind-of freaked out. I drank a CCW to heal a little and cure confusion and I wasn't nuked into oblivion!! I forget how many of my 238 max HPs I had but I knew it was time to cast teleport self. I had a fail chance of 4% (I believe the 4% vs 5% is part of the pixie patch's "magical" species bonus) and I failed! I was down to 90-ish hit points and noticed that my guests had invited some guests of their own, including level 60-ish vortex that I've never seen before (name started with an A). I decided that I was very lucky to not already be dead (probably because Eol had summoned instead of attacked) and that I should just try the spell again and it thankfully succeeded!

    This is the furthest I've ever gotten without save-scumming so I'm glad that I will get to continue -- as long as I don't get myself killed in route to my treasure stash that contains my recall scroll. The high level vortex (that I haven't identified) is now roaming dangerously close to my stash and I'll probably have to burrow to get to it. At least I have a wand of teleport other on me.

    I see people using summoning stuff way too much. As a mage it is particularly irresponsible, since you work so much better at range than in melee, and your primary advantage over other classes is knowing what you will fight and being able to prepare for it, which you can't do with summoning.

    More importantly, though, summoning is bad for every single character. It is strictly worse than simply running around fighting everything you see, since it provides less stuff, which means it fails to defeat even the dumbest strategy. It is also worse than staying on the level for an excessive amount of time waiting for spawns, since it provides less information about what you will fight. In reality, it is also likely to force you into a terrible fight that you would ordinarily have been able to avoid through stealth and detection, as you found out.

    There are precisely two situations in which I can imagine someone wanting to use Summon stuff, and they are if you really really want to fight some Undead (but why?), or if you have a limited amount of total XP around to gain (High-Elf Mage with force descent?), though even then, Wand of Clone Monster is just so much better.

      Your perspective is much appreciated. I'm just glad that I didn't have to die for this lesson. And with this fragile race, your points are even more relevant. Pixie ranger has a hit die of 8. I won't be repeating that mistake any time soon, but I also guess that I didn't realize they could summon uniques.

        In other words, staffs and scrolls of summon are a noob trap.

        Most long-time players have learned to id new stuff while standing on the stairs, which is another quirky aspect of the game that one needs to learn the hard way at first, and it's just another boring thing to remember after you know it.

        I think the game would be much better without them. Well-balanced summoning traps would be a much better mechanic.
