    Well thats a good start.

I usually have the worst luck with RNG (seems like the wrong game to play if that's its actually true) but just picked up Narthanc with @lvl3 on DL6. I usually have to put up with excellent or at best ego items till DL20+. This is the best start I've ever had with almost 20 years of playing this game. C'mon RNG be with me this round!

Also as an added bonus, its onto a rouge so the benefit is even higher considering weapon type paired to the class.

Hmmm.. what's your playstyle like? How much time have you spent playing Angband? I mean, you say 20 years, but how often over that time period.

I have played on and off but I probably have more time on this game than any other game I have ever played. I vary my playstyle depending on how serious I feel at the moment. I usually have 3 or 4 different race/class combos going on at the same time with different playstyles on each but I usually come right in the middle of aggressive diving and cautions play. Its like I said in the first post my RNG luck it seems is horrible. If a game has "crit chance" as a stat in the game I will never build into it. Numbers never seem to swing into my favor.

My most recent win I was still carrying a Broad Sword of West. at DL80ish.

Is this a common event for most people that play this game? If so I've been getting screwed hard for a long time.

What version are you currently playing? It sounds like you have been getting screwed for a long time. That is really bizarre.

A scientific minded person would say people don't have good or bad luck. Personally, in games with a lot of RNG, I find my luck to swing very strongly both ways, but overall I feel that in RNG games I have better than average luck; that is to say; I feel like I get more good fortune than law of averages maybe should provide. On the other hand, I do get some crazy bad luck at times (one breath of a young blue dragon destroying the one out of 5 different metal objects in my inventory that just happened to by my only wand of TO).

I have been playing this game actively about two years. Lately I have been playing *a lot*. I dunno how many games I've played, but I have picked up a 'thanc at DL10 or less probably five to eight times all told.

I don't think I've had such a bad melee at the end game as a broad sword, ever (aren't broad swords like one of the worst weapons in the game after awl-pikes?) I used to play about 100k turns a game but have been diving more of late and even when I dive aggressively I still usually find good equipment by DL80s. Of course, games where I don't find good equipment, I don't live to see DL80. I'd say 1 out of 5 games the RNG feels like it is against me and I can't get the gear I need to continue diving without dying not n(h)eedlessly.

EDIT: Do you use rods of treasure detection? This is one of the last items if I have too many good items vying for place in my pack that I will drop. I'm very curious how you go about exploring the dungeon/finding items. If you're playing Rogue, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding secret rooms as they have really good Searching, right?

I'm playing 4.0.5 at the moment, but like I said I've been playing since I was like 10yo (27 now) so I have played many deferent versions. I usually have to wait for DL30+ before I start getting any artifacts. I have never seen (without the ^AC debug) any of the artifact dragon armor or the mace of disruption, chaos blade, or even Ringil for that matter. I have gone all the way to Morgoth with Angrist before. I just assumed that its SUPER rare to get these items and Super rare to find artifacts at sub DL40 or so.

Sure. Finding artifacts below dl 20 is not all that common. (Nor is finding speed boots, etc.) People tend to dive though this region--actually they dive all the way to dl 30 where stat potions are native--unless a level feeling shows there's something really out of the ordinary. Artifacts continue to become more common the deeper you go.

Well things like Deathweaker are rare. I've only ever found it once--Ringil twice, Doomcaller a few times, Feanor twice (once dropped by Morgoth) and so forth. These are not common items by any metric. And I have never found power DSM of any sort, let alone the artifact one.

What about rings? What rings have you found? (Not sure if I have ever encountered Angrist).

What do you typically find around DL80s?

I'm playing a HE rouge at the moment and yes they have exceptional searching but after playing the game so long it almost become intuitive when looking for places to search for the hidden doors. I constantly keep detect traps, doors, stairs overlapped to ensure that I don't miss any rooms but for non-mages I do full searches with some tactically placed scrolls or staffs (depending on which I have) to ensure that the larger blank spaces in the full north, south, east, west dungeon margins are not hidden rooms or even buried vaults. Rods of detection (of any kind) are always kept or supplemented with a corresponding scroll or staff if possible. Also, I assure you that I'm not a superstitious person, I agree with you that there is no suck thing as "luck", but after playing A LOT games that RNG has a significant say so in the game experience I tend to fall on the losing side of the numbers. PEN over CRIT everyday.

I have found the elven rings many times and I seem to find exceptional "superb" weapons (the broad sword I spoke of had 20+ to hit and dam).

I'm sorry you have never gotten Angrist. It is one of my favorite from a lore perspective and its stats are actually quite good

Forged by Telchar, greatest of Dwarven smiths, and used by Beren to gouge a Silmaril out of Morgoth's crown, this long chopping dagger slices through ordinary metal as easily as its name, "Iron Cleaver", suggests.

clean out every DL and by DL10 you will probably have one of the three daggers. happens so often that we've been considering nerfing them.

                          Really?
That might explain why I have never gotten those daggers till later. I usually dive to 15+ before I really start doing any clearing.

You're playing with level feelings on tho, right? If you get a 6 feeling early you should clear the level; there's a decent chance it's a thanc.

I used to find them all the time, but now it's pretty rare that I don't find a down stair before a level feeling shows up, so I dive right past them. Finding any *thanc or the phial at all are uncommon events for me these days, and it's not all rare for me to be DL60 or lower before I get my hands on my first artifact.
