    My first char dead :(

My lv 14 high elf ranger just died My first character, I was playing really slowly becouse I just started my adventures in roguelikes but then I read some advices on this forum about the diving, but I taked it slowly, I was on lv 9 and killed a baby golden dragon(yay!), go some cash and felt really confident about myself so I entered lv 10 and saw a pseudo-dragon, 'hes a** is mine' I thought. When I started to run out of potions and p-d lost only half of his HPs I read the scroll of recall, started to drink potions and waited to get teleported to town, but he made some nasty combo on me and managed to kill me

3 days of work gone... well time to start another char tomorrow, I think I will go for human Paladin, and throw those recall scrolls earlier if I find any monster too hard.

    Welcome to angband.

Don't worry too much. The good thing is, your next character will probably take way less than 3 days to get to that level. And you now know one major angband rule :

If you don't know a monster, be very very careful when fighting it.

Another rule: Recall is not a good escape method. Teleport is better, Teleport Other is better than that. There are other options, and their usefulness depends on your situation.

Don't take it too hard! You can expect to lose a *lot* of characters if you keep playing...

But don't worry, once you have a bit of experience you'll be able to get to that depth in half an hour and dying won't be such a big deal.

EDIT: Playing as a human will make the game harder. If you want a character that will survive well, I'd recommend Half-Troll or High-Elf Warrior.

Damn, I knew I forgot about something! Phase Door!

Well another good lesson: take some time to think about all your possibilities before you do something, if I would use that phase door spell I could get myself out of the trouble and the SoR would work just in time

Thanks for the posts I don't really take it so hard I'm just a lil sad And yea maybe I will soon make it to that depth in half an hour, I was really surprised how deep ppl can get in very short time when I visited this forum for the first time

          Edit:
I will go for human, I'm kind of a role-play guy, just got that idea of human battle-priest, who smashes deamons with his holy hammer, calls his God to aid him with magical powers(Warhammer anyone?)

Phase Door isn't a great way to escape either, I'm afraid. Pseudo-dragons are just one of many, many monsters who have ranged attacks.
If you want to play as a Paladin, may I suggest a Dwarf or Dunadan?

Dwarf just doesn't fit my idea of war-priest. Dunadan is ok I think(they are something like humnas right?).

Well that phase door was sure a better option than staying in close combat with that pseudo dragon

I would add that the best way to play Angband is not to win, because then a death can be really crushing. Instead play to learn-- try to get deeper and survive for longer each time.
takkaria whispers something about options. -more-
