I think Osse counts as a gotcha -monster. One of the few. Others (to me at least) are Kavlax, Gorlim, Phoenix and Cat Lord. Cat Lord melee is a surprise, and I seem to try Gorlim always too soon.

In olden days when Osse was still Azriel, angel of death you could guess what you might get from him. From Ainur that isn't any way associated with undeads/dead nether is a surprise. Maybe Osse should have water-based attacks instead. I think water bolt from monster that deep is almost as deadly, and actually more dangerous when you know what to expect, thanks to way more dangerous side-effects.

Unfortunately this clearly wouldn't help against something that can deal 200+ damage with any of his attacks... Next time just use an escape or *destroy* the area. A plain !healing would have probably not helped either.

Yeah, I phased away and died in *trying* to use a staff of healing. I need to start breaking into my stores in the house of various healing potions if I am going to be fighting deep uniques like that.

        Die and learn, I suppose.

Plain Healing potions are pretty plentiful, and you're absolutely expected to be using them for difficult situations (which Ossë absolutely counts as). *Healing* and Life potions can usually be reserved for the endgame, but if you need a big heal, then you need a big heal; better to use it now and live, right?

Sympathies on the death. One of my first deep character losses was from not expecting Arien to have plasma damage, so I can understand being surprised by ainur breaths .

I find Lorgan can be a gotcha too, especially if you're relying on basic elemental spells/brands for the bulk of your damage. Ariel with her +20 speed, confusing melee, and difficulty to detect can also be surprisingly bad news (plus it's so tempting to try taking out all of the elemental uniques as early as possible to stop them from crushing stuff). Arien and Mouth of Sauron both seem more dangerous than other similar-leveled uniques (although Osse is definitely scarier than Arien), and if you also consider generic enemies, I think chaos hounds, drujs, and any L's above basic liches are very gotcha.

The only connections I can see to giving Osse nether breath is that his sea storm obsession was rather anti-life until Ulmo and Uinen got him to chill out, and he did (briefly) get tempted into joining Melkor's rebellion.
