First game in years just destroyed my interest

    Hello agband.oook.cz.

Level 9 Warrior. I was reading scrolls on a staircase during my first time in the dungeon to id them and the last one is deep descent. First enemy I find is Brodda the Easterling. I quickly confirm my dps is insufficient to defeat him. I attempt to phase away, but can't get away from him. I run until I hit a closed room. I still have some distance on him from my last phase attempt, so I use my {tried} wand. It turns out to be Wonder, and procs some really strong spells, swiftly dropping his hp. Second to last cast of the fight causes an earthquake. He survives it with 1 * of hp remaining. Last cast finishes him.

I run around and find no ways out of the room thanks to the earthquake. Searching finds no hidden doors. The only non-granite tile between freedom and my prison is quartz-- my whip does not allow me to tunnel through quartz.

I move as close to freedom as I can and exhaust the charges on my wand of wonder. I get multiple earthquakes, but none release me from bondage.

I have no recall scrolls. I have no more phase scrolls. I have no other weapons. I try my scroll of Summon Monster, but it creates something that cannot possibly drop an item, let alone something to help me.

Was it all the acolytes @ slained? Why did @ deserve to die like this? @ didn't even make a blunder.

@ has no way to escape. There might be drums in the deep, but @ is so entrenched @ couldn't even hear them. @'s food will last several days. Before @ runs out of light @ is going to quaff a potion of boldness, and then read a scroll of Blessing to try and save @ from the sin of his next action: which will be to use the arrowhead of one of @'s arrows to slit @'s wrists for a quick death.

    Goodbye angband.oook.cz.

It is still very possible to walk back to the surface or find recall, IF you can dig. Heck, with knowledge and impulse control, it's possible to keep going down and kill Morgoth without ever going to the town! (the ironman conduct)

I think you should see if you can make it back up to the surface. You might die on the way, but it can be done, and what a story, either way! I'd love to hear the update of this character's danger-fraught claw to the sunlight, or his dark demise.

But if you insist on closed-eared negativity and being a quitter, well goodbye and good riddance. Or just laugh it off, say "oh angband" and try again. Heck, a level 9 warrior is like all of 10 minutes of play at a decent clip.

If you really have enough food to last for days, you should try digging out with your whip (or if you have any other heavier weapons, use those instead). You have a minute but nonzero chance of digging successfully with pretty much anything, if I recall correctly.

Otherwise, yeah, quitting forever because a character that's just getting started managed to get themselves stuck is a bit hotheaded of you.

FYI it takes literally 3 minutes to get to level 9 as a warrior.

Also, if you starve to death this way, that is a very good death. You should be proud of it.

I don't know what wasn't clear about what I wrote, but I'm trapped. I tried tunneling through the quartz for several thousand turns already.

As for being a quitter-- I didn't quit, I just lost, without making any obvious mistakes I can correct for in my next game. I dunno what part of that sounds motivating to you guys. Secondly, I think the humour of my post eluded you. I am frustrated, but the scenario is still hillarious.

edit: Debo: yeah I know, I'm still bummed out.

Telling a forum full of acolytes of the church of Angband that you're leaving the faith tends to horrify rather than amuse.

            As for mistakes:

            A) This is why I never run into caves myself. I never want to starve to death in a cave-in, having done nothing wrong.
            B) You might have been able to quaff the speed potion and run for stairs.

              A) I believe it's a normal level that has been earthquaked, trapping @ in a small hole he couldn't tunnel out of.

              B) Ah, the benefit of hindsight!

He was pretty unlucky to get an earthquake out of a wand of wonder in the first place (let alone more than one). I seem to recall that they are a very rare outcome on the Wonder roll.

              Still funny though!

I meant in the real world. Spelunking is the stupidest sport.

This is a great story. If anything you should be happy that your first attemt turned out to be this exciting.

And yes, this is why you get at least one ?recall before diving deep.

You appear to be trapped in Utah. That sucks. You might get to like Salt Lake City after a while.
                    You are on something strange

Yeah; I'm already over it having gotten some sleep.

It was a normal level, and I got 3 earthquakes from the wand-- one during the fight that left me initially trapped, and then two more that not only didn't free me, but left me in an even smaller prison.

                      But... my precious !speed

I didn't deliberately dive, I was IDing some scrolls by use and read a Deep Descent. The depth itself wasn't even scary, just the circumstances that followed were kind of hillariously exactly specific to cause my doom.

This makes me wonder if someone's been modifying the Wonder function in the code recently, because you used to have absolutely horrible odds of getting any of the higher-level effects.

There's one effect that is basically only achievable by high-level mages, as I recall. Does something like massive self-heal + moderately significant unresistable damage to all enemies in LOS. Of course even if that effect is technically achievable, your odds of getting it are (were?) lousy.

Hang on, is this a general rule with wands of wonder? Device skill changes the odds? For both good & bad effects, or is mage less likely to haste the enemy?

I belive you roll a d100 (or somesuch) and add device skill then compare your score against a table of outcomes. Or something like that...
