    almost had him...use a scroll!

Vanilla 3.5, my first Morgoth fight. Had him down to 30% when after an onslaught left me with less than 300 hp. Blink failed (Ethereal Openings) and one of his summons breathed disenchant on me for the death. I was down to 11 phase doors and trying to conserve. Bad idea. Hopefully I get him next time! If anyone has any advice based on this dump let me know

If anyone has any advice based on this dump let me know
Buckland was a lot better than your HXbow, with priest try to get your WIS to 18/200+, carry Purifications (restore things, better healing), to last fight carry banishment -scrolls (all of them), get rid of dangerous summons *at the turn they are summoned*. Blink is not enough when there is multiple instantly deadly monsters nearby.

Pure spellcasters get 0% failure with 18/200+ manastat. It's pretty much their major priority right after CON and speed. Nearly everything else can be sacrificed to get that. In your case a good HA weapon with +4 to WIS would have been better than Wrath, and Amulet of Wis better than Elessar.

You were also too slow. +26 makes double-manastorm way too likely. Second RoS instead of RoDam could have saved you.

(Priest is actually purer spellcaster than mage. You can actually win without using melee or shooting, any scrolls, wands, staves or even healing potions if you just have enough speed, pStun, pConf, pBlind, sustained WIS 18/200+, all spellbooks and big bunch of restore mana).

      Bad luck.
Elessar wasn't giving you much, I'd have used an amulet of wisdom (ideally +6, they're pretty easy to find). That would have given you 0% fail AND, crucially, sustained your wisdom.

      You'll stick 'im next time!

Thanks for the replies! I actually had a +5 wis amulet I should have kept, I guess I foolishly thought +2 speed from Elessar was better than the extra 3 wis (~50 mana). I didn't know about the spell failure difference.

I was +36 speed for the whole fight, as I started it with 15 speed potions. Is that sufficient? Or should I have more perm speed and potions for 40+ speed?

I seemed to be doing ok, I don't recall M ever getting 2 turns on me.

As for the sling of buckland I got impatient and didn't take time to find good shots. I tried enchanting some iron ones to compare and the dpr was less than my bolts. I suppose some mithril shots would have been better. But in either case, I didn't really see much opportunity to shoot him. He was usually in a wall or open space right next to me, otherwise not in LoS. The only time was when I had TO'd him to set down more glyphs. That kept him away temporarily.

Against Morgoth, the main thing is to be at at least +30 speed. Any less than that and he could double-move you.

As a pure-caster, getting down to 0% failure rate is huge. It requires prioritizing your casting stat, but once you do, you can rely on your spells in any situation (barring blindness/confusion/stunning/amnesia, of course), and that's vital for your lategame flexibility. Hell, if Blink wasn't at 0% fail I would have preferred to use a Potion of *Healing* rather than try to cast it, depending on what's in LOS.

Just because slings are ranged weapons doesn't mean you can't use them in melee range. With +2 extra shots you're effectively "moving" three times faster than usual, since each shot only takes a third of a turn to execute. Even if your damage is somewhat lower than when fighting in melee, the access to "bullet time" you get could make it worthwhile.

Interesting. Aren't the extra shots incorporated into the damage per turn calculations on the Inspect screen?

If it says "damage per turn", then yes. If it says "damage per shot", then no. But when you have extra shots, you don't use them all at once the way you use all your blows; instead, they're fired one at a time.

In other words, say you have 4 blows/round and 3 shots/round. If you fought in melee, the sequence would be:

              You: 4x attacks
              Monster turn
              You: 4x attacks
              Monster turn
              etc.

If you used a launcher, then it would instead be

              You: 1x shot
              You: 1x shot
              You: 1x shot
              Monster turn
              You: 1x shot
              You: 1x shot
              You: 1x shot
              Monster turn
              etc.

As a consequence, if there are multiple monsters around, their turns get "spaced out" far more and you can easily interrupt your firing to heal or blink or whatever. Similarly, you'd be much safer fighting Morgoth with a speed disadvantage if you spend a lot of time firing, since he can't get a double turn on you if your turns are only using half as much time as normal.

You also bullet-time when melee killing monsters with fewer blows than you can get per-round. So that lvl 50 warrior can kill 6 snagas/turn.

Am I right in thinking that this is only really true if you are killing said monsters in less than one turn? Derakon...?

That's correct. It does make a huge difference for warriors when fighting breeders, but otherwise it generally doesn't make much difference.

Yeah, killing monsters in fewer blows than you have per round requires killing monsters in less than one turn.

Usually for Priest, yes, but you played H-Troll with less than 100% saving throw. Successful brain smash from Morgoth will slow you down, and your chardump shows speed +26, so I'm guessing that was your actual speed at that time.

For priest that's another reason to get WIS to 18/200+: you get better saving throw. 100% saving throw prevents paralyzation from melee and spells (I think drinking potion of sleep still paralyzes you), level teleportation from monster spells and nexus and makes attacks like brain smash completely harmless. No more "It yells DIE! You die -more-".

A good point that, and well made.

The thing is, I'm convinced there was a cogent point to my question there somewhere, but I can't for the life of me work out what it was now.

I blame Messrs Cabernet and Sauvignon.
