    I'm wondering what I should give my Sorcerer as a backup method of fighting. IF you read the log, you'll notice that I had to resort to using a wand of spark to kill one final soldier ant... I put some points in swords, and a few in archery, but I'm on the hedge. I have a really nice mana pool with an 18/60 INT this early, however, so I haven't started having problems yet. I just got sonic blast which is a really nice change from the crappy stinking cloud... Also, what resistances/skills should I look into that I haven't already.

    And I died. I ran out of !CSW, and I didn't use WoR when I should've. Gang of kobold dart throwers. I exhausted a full mana pool at them as well as a whole wand of spark, a wand of MM, and alf a wand of Frost Bolt before I cast Phase Door, and found another group... I died 5 spaces from a stairwell...

      Can someone give me some advice as to what to lookout for? I just killed Bullroarer with another character of a similar nature...

        The most importent advice for any mage-type charater: don't fight everything and allways have lots of escape methods available. If you avoid anything with strong ranged attacks (kobold dartthrowers are a nice example ) magic and devices should keep you alive and going. Just add stealth, perception and magic resistance as skills and you have a nice focused character.

        If you really want some melee backup, unarmed combat is probably the easiest way to go, it's pretty strong early on. I wouldn't bother with archery, you miss far too often unless you put a lot of skill points in it.

          Yeah, I noticed that about the archery. However, it works really well at close ranges. I have a fairly good stealth as oh right now, and I have a strong perception for where I am (about 12% and a ring of aware +2) I'm at the point where I'm getting some nice spells... Soundblast and fireflash being good examples. Confuse and sleepmay turn out to be nice as well. I get sleep in 2 magic levels or so,

            Damn. My guy died with a power of 40; killed by a Ghoul on 650'. I was excited about him... I usually cheat, so he was my farthest so far... Back to stat rolling. Any advice on a source of rPar, rConf, rBlind, or any of those other nasties that stop my spell casting?

              Buy !CCW, which eliminate blindness and confusion. I'm not divining what rPar means. As for "suggestions", I suggest playing with what you've got. I find planning on getting something in Sangband impossible.

              I've never had much patience for pure spellcasters in S, as they need a much slower pace. Pick up a melee attack routine; that will save your butt a lot.

              As for spells, wonder and fire bolt are pretty good, and fireflash and sonic burst are also regulars. The early game for me is all about melee and phase door, with magic missile for ranged stuff.

              Once you pick up elemental defense and haste self, try to hunt dragons.
              a chunk of Bronze {These look tastier than they are. !E}

                I think by rPar he means resistance to paralysis. Wisp, if my guess is correct, it is called free action instead. Partial answer is to pump up magic resistance if you can't find a corresponding item.

                As for pure casters, I usually don't have patience for them. Sangband is extremely fun while playing melee oriented, pure warriors, or hybrid classes based on close combat.
                Anyway, it seems that wands are a suplementary, or maybe even primary, way to go while playing pure casters.

                  I enjoy casters, as playing warriors feels too boring at times, and when your in trouble, you don't have as many options. Several bookfuls of spells > a couple magical items.

                    Oh, and I was talking about free action. Like I said, my last guy got paralyzed and got beaten to death without my being able to do anything.
