Rungie the Gnome Mage

I'm playing my first wizard in Angband and, boy, is it tough! I'm 31 level, only gone down to 2000 ft. and have only found one of the better books (Resistances).

I just found Anglarang and the speed's helping. I'm wearing two rings of escaping - the only things keeping me going, I think.

Well, back to the mines... time for more creeping... :-)

I believe "Rungie" is Gnomish for "run away!"

Finally found Raals. Rungie's now level 35 and he should be able to start diving a bit with the extra firepower.

Hrm... hit points of 700 and speed of +30 or hit points of 450 and speed of +50?

The extra HP, no question. Speed hits diminishing returns pretty sharply after +28.

Thanks! That's what I was leaning towards (helps against those surprise breath attacks) but I couldn't figure out a way to tell just how fast over +30 is during game play and if it was worth it.

Hrm... sling of buckland or Cubragol? I'm leaning towards carrying cubragol and switching to sling if I need to missle. The +10 speed is very nice.

Why would you use a sling as a mage? Use your spells, it should be enough to kill anything...

Depends of the sling. Buckland slings can be rather mighty weapons. If you get both +2 shots and might you have x4 weapon with three shots with mage. With good ammo that beats pretty much any mage spell (if you can hit the target) and you save your mana for utility and emergency reset-battleground -spell (destruction).

Yeah, it's a +2 in both shots and might (and +5 dex).

I'm doing ok, but I'm missing the last book, so I don't have access to the really good spells yet. I keep looking...

Ah wouldn't you know... a Kelek's finally shows up in an undead pit on level 85 and I just used my last mass banish scroll the previous level... *sigh*

The fates are cruel in Angband....
