I shudder to think what the RNG has in store for me.
Well- I wouldn't suicide just yet. I once found both a big =Speed (+14 I think?) _and_ a rod of speed at around that depth.. maybe a bit deeper. That one was a winner . Just don't get stupidly overconfident, cause that _will_ kill you quick.
Of course, I had that Gnome Mage who wasn't much deeper when he found Ringil and Cubrago in the same vault. Later on, Gothmog killed him with one breath.

Yes, I distinctly remember being sick with jealousy...
But now I have no cause for complaint
I will try not to die, it would be a pity to waste this start.
I'll have to mention this here. I began a new character (Half-orc warrior) so naturally I find purifications and healing on level 1 (I was ascending from level 5). Well, I sold it and got some nice cash to spend just to find another copy of it almost right afterwards, It was somewhere around dlevel 10
I saw an orange "H" and assumed it was harmless (a Chimera or Sphinx or something), but it turned out to be a Gorgimera. I am unfamiliar with the coloration of monsters in Vanilla...

I have found Wrath _so many times_ before 1000'... the thing about the deep books is that they don't help you much in getting to the depths where they are useful. Speed, OTOH... If you are even +14 perm you can just waltz down to a reasonable depth, even without a lot of other advantages.
But.. Ringil and Cubragol in one vault trumps mine, if you found them early. Though I imagine you had to take some risks to get them- I found mine on the floor. I think the first time I ever found a speed ring it was at 250' or so, on the floor. I died, after a long painful struggle to get to stairs, to Brodda, with the ring un-ided in inventory- it was +5, so it would have let me escape easily. I knew it was good, but I didn't understand quite how good (I was fairly unspoiled at that point)- probably a good thing for my state of mind.
