    High-Elf Rogue newbie

After begging for help with my first Angband character (Human Warrior who got to ~clvl35, ~dlvl 40 before getting stats scrambled in an awful way), I was given the advice to try a high-elf or dunedan Paladin.

I killed a couple of those out of sheer inattention due to boredom. They're too defensive, which to me is not a very exciting way to play. Maybe another time.

So, I tried Rogue instead, and this is way more fun. I've lucked out in the early game, I feel -- a main-gauche of *Slay Undead* dropped very early on, and I just recently found Narthanc, which is sick good. Just a few minutes ago I stumbled across Cammithrim, which are a big help as well.

Currently at clvl 21, and just about to hit around 1000'. I'm still missing some of the core elemental resists, but otherwise I'm pretty well covered I think. Will start diving a bit deeper, hoping to boost my str and dex and to find a shield of resistance and +pois somewhere.

    Wish me luck

Abuse detect spells and stealth and you will win.

I spam Detect Monster, Detect Traps/Doors, and Detect Treasure constantly -- whenever my mana refills, which is very often

        Questions:

        a) What are those weird green tracer lines that show up on the floor after I've cast a Detect Traps spell? Is that like, the boundaries of my spell or something?

        b) What's the difference between Reveal Monsters and Detect Monsters? Does the former let you see invisible? (I can already do that.)

          Yes.

Reveal Monsters shows invisible monsters, yes. I don't recall off the top of my head if having See Invisible powers up Detect Monsters to show invisible ones, but it probably shouldn't.

It doesn't in vanilla. It does in many variants.

Just did a quick dive, and now I have Dethanc too I'm starting to feel like a mage! Being able to lightning-bolt rooms full of critters is super useful. Also, fun.

I almost died when a Druid I didn't see filled a room with Air Hounds, but I managed to scrape through.

I just hit a turning point, I think -- I found a Balance Drake sitting around on dlvl 27, and against my better judgment, i decided to assassinate him.

He dropped +10 boots of speed

I'm still lacking basic resists, though, so I'm not getting cocky yet. ESP + great stealth + detect spells makes caution a very viable option

Sweet deal -- I was diving in the hopes of finding a shield of resistance or something, and what I found was even better -- Hithlomir!

I've also been supremely lucky with +1/-1 potions. I've only been quaffing Brawn and Nimbleness, and it has only drawn from my Charisma (a couple times from Wis). Big ups!

The only really stupid thing I've been doing is letting Nexus Hounds breathe on me. I really have to stop that.

Considering your above comment, yes you should stop that. Getting your STR or DEX swapped with WIS and CHR now would probably suck big time.

Those gain one lose one potions have made nexus resist a lot more valuable as side-effect. Before that you usually had at least decent values in those not-so-important stats, but after drinking few potions of those that is no longer a case.

Yes, I've been much more careful of Nexus-ers since that last comment.

I've picked up a nice shooter, as well as an artifact staff that gives +pois. Lokkak dropped Resistances of Scarabtrices as well. Once I have Resist Poison as a spell, I'll be able to go from having no poison resist to perm + temp by switching weapons and casting, but if I don't see the poison-breather coming, I'm going to be toast

I also imagine that the failure rate of resist poison will be high for quite a while.

I found a rod of probing, which takes FOREVER to recharge but is going to be super handy for those umpteen monsters who I don't have in my monster memory yet.

Fun game so far! Rogues are awesome! I almost feel like they're OP in parts... very often I massacre an entire room full of monsters without any of them waking up. Serves them right for falling asleep in a dungeon, but I still feel a bit bad about it

Rogues can be quite fun thanks to their high stealth combined with good melee, yes. Stealth has exponential returns, incidentally -- every 3 plusses or thereabouts makes you twice as stealthy (so a guy with 9 stealth is twice as stealthy as a guy with 6 stealth).

Getting close to dlvl 40 now. Can somebody explain to me / point me to a resource about squelching? I think I need it haha. I've stopped selling things at the store, and I waste a lot of time ID'ing ego/splendid/whatevers, when really all I'm looking for is artifacts in most cases.

Also, stat potions are starting to even out my stats, so nexus isn't quite as scary as it used to be anymore!
