Kobold Rogue (clvl 38) looking for advice

I started playing Angband about 10 years ago and eventually took a break for a few years. I just got back into it, thanks to the awesome Android port. Man is 3.3.1 easier than what I remembered! This is my 3rd character and it's the first time I get that far (without save scumming).

My dump is here, I welcome any advice.

I was incredibly lucky to find BoS +9 and shortly later BoS +10. currently lounging around dlvl 45, hoping to get better artifacts. I just started learning spells, mainly Identify and Satisfy Hunger but I did not find much use in magic so far, for that rogue.

Congrats on the boots and Nice gear, the trident is an awesome weapon, lots of the tough uniques are undead and most of the others are evil.

      A few thoughts
      1) leave mushrooms of clear mind at home. Holhenneth protects you
      2) Stay away from monsters with Nexus breath or your stats may be shifted
      3) Without rShards, beware monsters that breathe shards, some are obvoiuous but e.g. Gelugon whom at least I connect with cold breath also breathe shards quite powerfully
      4) Your CON is low. Aim for 18/200. I'd even swap to 2x =CON instead of 2x =Slaying, more HP is survival
      5) Getting unhasted speed to >= 20 (ideally to 30+) is important later on. The sooner the better.
      6) More safe escapes would not hurt. ?Destruction, ?Teleport/Tele level
      7) I tend to read the ?Acquirement when found. Up to you but with five of them you'll probably get at least one useful item. Don't read with full inventory though. That has caused failure for me before.
      8) dLevel 75 is not that much harder to survive than dLevel 50 as long as you don't try to kill all you meet, especially not clearing graveyards until tremendous powerful

      Good luck!

      /Mathias

        Thanks for the tips!

Since yesterday, I am now clvl 40. I found the Cubragol crossbow (+10 speed) so I'm at +20 speed which is really nice.

I'm at dlvl 55 and will start diving more aggressively, I will probably read all those ?Acquirement when I get deeper. Looking for Shard/Nexus resistance. I've recently killed Scatha, Smaug, Klavax, Quaker and Adunaphel without too much trouble so I'm confident.

I'd read the scrolls now and hope for something to help you survive, I'm not sure how they work but I once got the last spellbook for my ironman mage on level 47. My last game I read a lot of them and *aqurement* on level 90+ and nothing intersecting dropped. I think the best way to survive is to remember its a turn based game, the way it plays (that I love) makes it easy to forget that. You can get out of pretty much any situation if you remember this. Like the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy says "Don't Panic"

An example I've seen a few times is arriving on a level in ironman only to find you're surrounded by time/gravity hounds. You're first reaction is usually to cast teleport or use the staff, this will end up getting you killed, see if you have other means to deal with them first, destructions great so is banish/mass banish if you have high hp. Always use a scroll in these situations for 0% failure rate if they aren't available scrolls of teleport level, or teleport if you think you can handle them 1on 1, just remember you might land next to a graveyard or another pack of hounds. Mage/priest eventually get 0% failure rate, but until then. You're 99% success with a staff or spell will fail this one time.

Welp, it's over. I was clvl 46, going around dlvl 65-66 and teleported into a pack of plasma hounds. I went down so quickly that I exited the death screen without taking a character dump. Oh well.

Now I'm playing a half-troll warrior, the brute force power is a nice change to kobold rogue. I'm also diving much more quickly, as there is no point spending 10 hours and 1.2 million turns slowly grinding if I'm gonna die quickly anyway.

Clvl 14, dungeon level 14, found an XP potion. Brought me to lvl 29 right away. That sure speeds up the early game a lot, I wish I could find that every time.

Finding !Exp early on makes me overconfident 9 out of 10 times. What am i doing with a clvl 28 hanging around dlvl 15, thus diving further too fast and walking into some kind of breather.

Sorry to hear about you're rogue, teleporting at high levels can be brutal. If you want to play a good diving fast character I'd recommended kobold warriors, there innate high dexterity, poison resistance and high stealth more than make up for the loss of some hp. Good stealth will save you from a lot of trouble and usually let you use a rod of probing before fighting. Or let you get the first blow in. Trolls are fun but they will wake up most creatures right away.
