Fear worsens your spell failure rates. Those Rings of Escaping aren't all gold.

Though I think they'd work better (i.e. be more obvious about it) if the "fear worsens spell failure rates" thing was removed in favor of a -2 INT/WIS penalty on the rings themselves.

Yes but if you have high int, the maxed out chance of casting mm stays maxed out. And some others stay at the minimum of 50% just a bit longer. They also don't cost mana, and don't stack ( at least I think so ).

But unless you are extremely unlucky with other items, the window where =escape is useful is very small.

I'm currently at episode 7.3 and wonder why you're keeping your Rapier of Slay Orc (no useful effect on that) and your Wand of Magic Missile (its damage per turn is getting less and less useful and it seems that, like me, you keep those wands in case you run out of mana but actually always forget to use them ).
I would have squelched one of those instead of the !oSpeed at 8:20.

I also wondered why you squelched your mushroom of Terror, they make you temporarily fast at the expense of being afraid which doesn't matter for your mage.

I kept the rapier, because I am not used to nosell yet. I used to keep stuff like that in my home instead of selling it, to keep thieves less effective.
Similar with the speed potion, wand are more expensive so I am used to dropping them later.
Doesn't terror have the same effect as =escape? if not it really was stupid. In any case I probably would just have forgotten to use it when I rally needed it.

Session 4

Fourth Session for Ezel the bowless mage. Heading for statgain.
Trying out my new mike, it's immune to breathing noises. But sensitive to background noise.

After rearranging his equipment Ezel recalls down. He ends up in his first mazelevel. Cleaning this almost kills him due to being swarmed by orcs and breeders.

Ezel finishes cleaning up the maze. Encounters a minor bug. Then he continues down.
We encounter our first Quylthulg, which I fail to correctly pronounce.

Ezel encounters his first swarm of Algroths, he underestimates them and almost dies.
As pennance he takes his time with this level.

Ezel meets a scout group.
With all his pockets full of semi-useful stuff he takes a break to drop some stuff in his hoard.
After even more equipment rearrangement, he heads back down.

Ezel has nice feeling and decides to take level 29 slowly.

But first he encounters my favourite monster:
Who knows why you are now facing an angel as an enemy? Is it a punishment from your own god for your sins, or a test of your mettle, or has this angel been sent by another god on behalf of someone who wishes to claim the glory for his own god? Perhaps you will never know: but it is here, and you must fight it.

With his new fur-coat, he tries to fit in into a pack of werewolfs. And almost gets eaten by their chieftain.

Ezel continues his drawn out fight against the werewolf extended family.
He encounters Khim, Son of Mim. After a chase through half the level, Ezel decides to run away, he picks up the last item he detected without paying much attention to it and leaves the level.

Finally on level 30, he again underestimates a pack of Algoths. Takes out a school of mages. And finally looks at the cap in his backpack. Turn out it used to belong to the ringmaker celebrimbor.

Happily he heads on through the level he gets supprised by a hummerhorn infection.

Ezel takes out the infestation the mage way. Finishes this level, while I babble about unrelated stuff. He does find his first scroll of Aquirement.

Ezel encounters his first pack of blinking monsters. Blink dogs. The throw him around the corridors while he blasts at them.
He picks up his first uninteresting Artifact.
Then he recalls and I end the session.

Hum, it may have the same effect indeed. I never used them to be honest, I just keep them around as emergency measure until I have a better use for the slot.

Otherwise, I started a high-elf mage with no_sell to do a quick test and, guess what, I found a potion of Experience at dlevel 4 and leveled up to clevel 28. It reminded me of something
