My last try at running an egoless mage died abruptly and stupidly. After taking a break for awhile, I decided to try again, and am happy to report that this time around I was able to finish (http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=11393). I also decided to avoid anything "unreasonably lucky," so e.g. when I found an Amulet of the Magi at level 33, I had to just leave it lay there. I eventually found one at "proper" depth.
At the deep levels I found that I prefered to wear a Magi Amulet and two big +Con rings (rather than one +Con and one +Speed) until my HP was up high enough, mostly just avoiding monsters that moved "very quickly". Once my HP got high enough, I switched in the speed ring and hunted down the seriously nasty uniques. Sauron went down fairly easily. The fight was Morgoth was long, but I was well prepared with consumables and Magi Staffs. I had to take it slowly and carefully since there was no margin for error: when Morgoth summoned something I had to duck out of line-of-sight first, then [Mass] Banish it, then check to be sure I was over 600 HP, then return to the fray. And Teleport when Morgoth got too close.
I think I'm going to leave the Ironman crown to Eddie though .. that's a bit too intense even for me.
